Rueben's Burger Bistro feeds bikers and Belgian beer enthusiasts in Boulder

This isn't scientific, but we're willing to bet that the most watched sporting event in Boulder isn't the Super Bowl or the World Series. Rather, we'd put a sizeable sum on it being the Tour de France.

When it's time for the Tour, it's impossible to escape--coffee shops set up TVs, speakers blast updates and Boulder's cyclists come out in force, chatting about each leg as if its some world news event that everyone is keeping up with.

And next year, we're betting one of the best places to catch the action of the Tour will be at Rueben's Burger Bistro, 1800 Broadway.

Rueben Verplank opened this spot in May, and the whole place is teeming with cycling references and imagery. Photos adorn the yellow walls. Patrons talk about their morning rides. And each burger is named after a leg of the race or a part of a bicycle or an athlete.

Those burgers are hefty, served with a mélange of toppings that range from fried eggs to roasted beets on soft pretzel buns. The menu also boasts four preparations of mussels and a build-your-own mac and cheese offering, replete with suggestions that include bacon and green chiles.

And then there's the beer list, which is almost exclusively Belgian. We haven't seen the rich, fruity Duchesse de Bourgogne on tap, well, anywhere, so it was exciting to catch it here. Equally cool from a draft line was the lighter -- and lightly-hopped --Chimay Cinq Cents. Those rotating taps are supplemented by a deep Belgian bottle list, perfect for sipping on the patio that backs up to Walnut-- or sucking down while watching the town's favorite race at the bar.
