Breakfast on the Edge (of Sloan's Lake) will open in Edgewater in January

Edgewater's restaurant and bar culture continues to grow, what with newcomers like Walk-In Burgers (2255 Sheridan Boulevard), Providence Tavern (5280 West 25th Avenue), The Cooler (2045 Sheridan Boulevard) and Vina Pho & Grill (2045 Sheridan Boulevard) joining stalwarts like U.S. Thai (5228 West 25th Avenue), Sloan's Bar & Grill (5820 West 25th Avenue) and the Edgewater Inn (5302 West 25th Avenue).

And now the Sheridan Boulevard strip that parallels Sloan's Lake is getting yet another food temple: Breakfast on the Edge will open early next year at 2401 Sheridan Boulevard, in the same small mall that houses The Cooler, Vina Pho, Walk-In Burgers and an unremarkable outpost of Tamale Kitchen.

The space, which will seat eighty and include a patio (naturally) overlooking the lake, is a sister restaurant to Breakfast on Broadway, which has been going gangbusters ever since it opened in 2008 at 2901 South Broadway, although Val Erpelding, who owns Breakfast on Broadway, won't be running the new joint. Instead, he has a licensing agreement with Norman Hansen, a local mortgage broker who, says Erpelding, has a bug for the restaurant business. "Norman has been trying to get into the restaurant business for a long time, plus he's a great guy and someone who I'm happy to be partnering with," notes Erpelding, who will consult on the new joint for several months.

Breakfast on the Edge will start turning out flapjacks, a variety of hashes, eggs Benedict and French toast sometime during the third week in February, and when it does come to fruition, it will mimic, by and large, Breakfast on Broadway -- at least with regard to the breakfast board. "The menu won't be identical, but it will be very close. We don't want to change things too much, mostly because Breakfast on Broadway has done so well, and we think that Edgewater is dying for something similar," says Erpelding.

At the very least, the hamlet's dwellers will no doubt embrace the bottomless mimosas, a Saturday-through-Monday ritual at Breakfast on Broadway that's a drunk's dream. Breakfast on the Edge will continue the tradition, as well as offer the same hours as the Broadway location: 6 a.m.to 2:30 p.m. daily.
