H Burger attracts daytime crowds with fast service, good burgers

When Pete and Ann Pflum envisioned H Burger Co, the burger joint they put into a new spot at 1555 Blake Street, they designed a space and menu that they hoped would lure downtown dinner crowds to a block that, historically, has emptied out after 5 p.m.

After building out the hip dining room, the couple brought in molecular gastronomy wizard Ian Kleinman to consult on the menu, and though he left just four days after H Burger opened, the spirit of his food lives on, in the form of burgers with creative accoutrements, fries with special dipping sauces, and liquid nitrogen milkshakes.

The Pflums priced their offerings to allow diners to enjoy a full meal for less than ten bucks, hoping to win over an army of appreciative guests who would come for lunch, happy hour or an early dinner, then later come back and drink late into the night.

I had hope for this place. When my wife and I went we had to switch tables to the non-(burger)smoking section. Our food came out-unimpressive and we left with too much money on the table. If you are going to do burgers there is more to it than a trendy dining room and fancy shakes . . like uh say a damn good burger. People will eat a good burger off the hood of a car- they want a good amount of grease dripping meat and they want it cooked their way. Especially when the word "burger" is part of the restaurant's name. I expect Westword will be throwing up some advertising for H Burger soon . . obviously.
Great burger,especially like the lamb burger, fries are the best. never had a problem there, Like any restaurant if you have an issue deal with it then & there, at least give them a chance to fix it.
Have had a great time every time I go. One of the best burgers I have ever eaten. Not to mention the milk shakes are out of this world.
good review Laura...although the Denver Post's only criticism was that it was too crowded on a Friday evening. Weird you thought it was slow. But he did agree with you that the food was very tasty. I guess them winning the Denver Burger Battle wasn't a mistake. Food is reasonably priced for a downtown eatery. Heck, Smash is more expensive and they are just frozen fast food. I love H, Cholon and Pete's. It's now a perfect block!!...I heard rumors that they are opening a second place. Is that true Laura? side note...The shakes kill my insides (I'm lactose) but the taste is so worth the pain. i love reading your column Laura...all the best.
I personally LOVE the lamb burger... and...well... everything else for that matter! We go there all the time for their never ending happy hour to get things started, it's just so nice to not have to worry about what time it is for 241's. Friday and Saturday nights are usually really busy too... lots of buzzzz when we go there. HIGHLY recommend.
I haven't been too amazed with their food, but they do have a pretty good all day happy hour.
Been there 3 times now and still cannot get them to serve me a burger medium rare. Each time it comes out very, very well done. Not bad, not great...just a big "mehhh" They offer to fix it, but I only have so much time for lunch...how about getting it right the first time. Not giving them any more chances.
They served me a milk shake with shards of glassed in it. Not too impressed. Do yourselves a favor and walk next door to ChoLon.
I hope your review of H Burger is honest this week Laura...it's gross.
