Marczyk Fine Foods plans to open a second location on Colfax and Fairfax

Marczyk Fine Foods plans to buy the old Fairfax Ace.
The owners of Marczyk Fine Foods, who have run their upscale neighborhood market on Seventeenth Avenue for eight years, are planning to open a second, similar location in the vacant Fairfax Ace Hardware at Colfax Avenue and Fairfax Street.

Tomorrow night, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Pete Marczyk, Barbara Macfarlane and the rest of the team will host a get-together at the gutted store, at 5100 East Colfax, to talk to neighbors, neighborhood groups and other interested parties about their plans.

"It will be very similar to our current store. Our concept is what it is: a neighborhood market that offers a viable fresh-food alternative," Marczyk says, adding that the building was a Safeway before it was an Ace. "So everything old is new again."

Like the current Marczyk's, the new one will have an adjoining liquor store with a separate entrance. It will primarily sell wine, but will also stock a small about of beer and liquor. Marczyk's liquor license hearing is set for December 23 at 9 a.m.

"We love that neighborhood, and a lot of our customers come from that neighborhood," says Macfarlane, adding that there are several stable areas around Colfax and Fairfax, including Park Hill, Mayfair, Montclair, Lowry and Stapleton.

If all goes well -- meaning the liquor license is approved, along with some bank loans -- construction could start at the beginning of 2011 and the store could open in the fall.

"All the balls are in the air. But they are all going in the right direction," Marczyk says. "People are excited about having an offering on that side of town, and the real excitement for us is to do something on Colfax and the resurgence of neighborhood shopping."
