Later this week, the back room of El Senor Sol, a Mexican restaurant at 2301 Seventh Street, will become the new quarters for Tapas de España, a Basque-region bonanza from El Senor Sol owner Francisco Jerez, who hails from Spain -- as does the chef who's responsible for building the board.

The bold red menu, stamped with a bull and a sun, is chock-full of Spanish small plates -- tortilla Española, patatas bravas, albondigas en salsa, Spanish meat and queso platters, boquerones en vinagre and gambas al ajillo -- as well as paellas, desserts and liquids, including sangria.

Manager Jahir Meza says the boxy tapas room, which can accommodate about thirty butts, will open this Thursday or Friday, serving both lunch and dinner. "I've tried a few of the dishes, and I think people are really going to like what we're doing," says Meza. If they do it right, we'll be the first to concur.
