D.P. Dough will make your night all right with a fluffy calzone

You're a little drunk, the music's bumpin', and suddenly...you're hungry.

Really, really hungry. But many bars don't serve food (chips and beef jerky don't count; neither do Totino's pizzas warmed in a microwave). Time to dial D.P. Dough.

D.P. Dough opened in November at 1228 East Colfax Avenue, where it makes good, gooey, cheesy, hot calzones -- the perfect drunk food. But you don't have to stumble (or worse, drive) to the storefront to get the 'zones: D.P. Dough delivers within an immense, five-mile radius (no mimimum order, either) -- but does about 20 percent of its business within just a few blocks.

"I made three deliveries today and never got in my car," says Chris Albert, who owns the D.P. Dough store on Colfax and licensed the concept from the founders. "Tooeys customers get a 15 percent discount. So do customers at the Squire, Kinga's and the Irish Snug. It really works out for these bars because most of them don't have kitchens. They're okay with us bringing food in. They even put our menus out in the bar."

D.P. Dough is open until 3 a.m. and serves more than three dozen different calzone combinations, as well as made-to-order calzones.

Albert got his start in the restaurant business working in his parents' Greeley eatery, Fat Albert's. In college, he worked at a D.P. Dough in Fort Collins and liked the concept. Now he owns the rights to the Denver area (there are also D.P. Dough locations in Boulder and Greeley) and is looking to open at second store on South Broadway.

"Calzones are such an easy thing to do, and the cool thing about this concept is I can do whatever I want. I can have a liquor license. I can serve soups or salads," Albert says. "But right now, we are doing pretty well letting people drink everywhere else."
