Michelle Obama orders ribs at Restaurant Kelly Liken, gets called fat by Rush Limbaugh

Dominique Taylor, Vail Daily
Michelle Obama spent her Presidents' Weekend without the president and with her daughters in Vail, where she skied, dined and managed to get the conservative media so riled up they called her fat.

We know that the First Lady has made battling childhood obesity her personal cause -- but we didn't know that we were all still in middle school.

And Rush Limbaugh, bat-shit crazy media pundit, is the class bully. "The problem is, and dare I say this, it doesn't look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice," he told his radio audience. "And then we hear that she's out eating ribs at 1,500 calories a serving with 141 grams of fat per serving.... She is a hypocrite."

His culinary critique followed a Vail Daily report that Obama had ordered ancho chile-braised bison short rib with wilted Tuscan kale, hominy and wild mushroom sauté, in addition to a pickled pumpkin and arugula salad at Restaurant Kelly Liken when she dined there on Saturday night. And it followed similar commentary from other conservatives, including a controversial cartoon depicting the First Lady as plump.

Never mind that Top Chef contestant Kelly Liken sources locally and organically, or the obvious nutritional value of things like "kale" and "arugula." As Liken told the Daily, the rib actually runs somewhere close to 600 calories. Which is completely reasonable for dinner, especially after a full day of skiing. And far from being a hypocrite, Obama dined at the restaurant because of its association with a local school program that teaches kids to grow produce in a greenhouse.

Which means Obama's getting raked over the coals for a weekend of exercising, eating kale and practicing what she preaches. But since talking about childhood obesity doesn't make great radio, why not go straight for the personal insults?

School's out.

Rush Limbaugh From The EIB Network -reported that the SEIU (Obama's auto union) is organizing andtraining a hundred thousand occupyers for massive demonstrations acrossAmerica this Spring. They will occupy churches, banks, schools, and anythingelse that will disrupt the system. And this political mob of thugs willstink up America until election day. These Mid-East style demonstrators areactually stealing Conservative's slogans like "Taking Back America", whileopposition will be labled "racists" and "enemys of the state." As if thatwere not enough, Iran claims to have thousands of suicide bombers insideAmerica. They threaten to unleash them if Israel attacks Iran. And Iranbrags that their army of terrorists came to the US through our open southernborder. Who knew? .Question; Just what constitutes treason?https://www.facebook.com/pages...

It's ironic how the GOP gets mad at the (erronous) idea that the First Lady is trying to "tell us all what to eat," while they try to tell women what we can and can't do with our own uterus!

Hypocrite?  Fat?

Pot, meet kettle.

you are factually WRONG.  WHERE in this statement,  "And then we hear that she's out eating ribs at 1,500 calories a serving with 141 grams of fat per serving.... She is a hypocrite."    that you posted, does he SAY the first lady is fat, or anything LIKE it.  He merely stated the fat and calorie content of what she was reported to have eaten.  I am calling the fire department on you because your pants are on fire.

I don't know how you can call MOOOOOCHELLE benign when she won't stay out of our lives, I don't need or want her to tell me what to eat or what to feed my children. Rush is talking of the hypocricy of Moooochelle telling the rest of us what to eat and then eating anything she wants! I personally don't care what she puts in her pie hole, but she needs to stay the hell out of my Happy Meal from Mcdonalds!!!! And while we are on the subject didn't she just get back from a 17 day vacation in Hawaii that cost US taxpayers millions of dollars???? Does she not remind anyone of the Nobles telling people to, "let them eat cake?"

Wookies eat what wookies want!  And Rush Limbaugh was right, she's a big hypocrite.  Very hard to be a role model when you're not practicing what you're preaching.

I don't agree with her politics, but I don't think that she is fat.

Rush is right on target. The first lady has no business trying to encourage schools to feed kids anything except breaded, beige-colored pressed meat product. That way when they grow up, they'll be like Rush (and several of the commenters here) and be completely unable to tell the difference between a pig and a bison. And ignorant kids in school means millions more Rush listeners in the making!

No media bias whatsoever at the fair-and-balanced WW. ROFLMAO. Michelle "Marie Antoinette" Obama is so full of shit. "We all must sacrifice, take fewer vacations, blah blah blah."

"Never mind that Top Chef contestant Kelly Liken sources locally and organically"

LMAO!! And then FLOTUS flies halfway across the country to eat this crap!! What a joke!

I thnin the point isn't that Rush is tubby, the point is that Michelle Obama is trying to FORCE schools to eliminate all junk food, in a typical lefty nanny state sort of way, then prances in hyporcrisy by chowing down on fatty pig products. And yes, she's got quite the prodigious hiney to "back " it up.

I agree with the first lady. Let's have more gov. In our personal lives.

Can you say something that you aren't just parroting from Limbaugh's show? You are just proving to everyone else that Limbaugh listeners are not conservative or Republican, they're just idiots. Most true conservatives are far too grounded in common decency and respect to make the comments you and Limbaugh are making about First Lady Obama.

Jay
Jay

I'm a fiscally conservative libertarian and far from a liberal (although Niki S. chose to peg me as one above). However, claiming that we're going to turn into a "lefty nanny state" because the first lady wants to curb childhood obesity is over the top.

Something tells me you all didn't get your panties in a bunch when Barbara Bush promoted literacy as first lady. "The government can't tell us to read good, it's our constitutional right to be dumb and illiterate. Besides, Barbra Bush be a hypocrite, Rush Limbaugh said she watch television on her vacation!"

Wonk

Oh, the unfathomable horror of promoting healthy eating. What will those liberals think of next? Telling kids not to smoke? That'll be the day I lose it!

By the way, how is it so lost on right-wing wackos like you that eating something unhealthy is not contrary to Michelle Obama's message of healthy eating? She never told people they should subsist solely on salads and tofu, and she never told people they shouldn't ever eat unhealthy foods like ribs. Your assertion of "hyporcrisy" reveals your idiocy in more ways than one.

Careful, Rush. Looks to be like you'd be better off calorie counting your own 'diet'. Michelle O. might take one of her 'big guns' and pop you! Have you seen her biceps?????

Thanks to the rise of Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin discovering Facebook/Twitter, Limbaugh now feels the need to up his bullshit level in order to remain competitive with his target audience, AKA the fucktards of society.

Rush probably doesn't even comprehend the local food movement and is basing his caloric numbers on what he had at Chili's last week.

You are letting your liberal politics get in the way of reason. He's not the one telling everyone what to eat and what not to eat; get it?

Vibiana
Vibiana

It has nothing to do with my politics, which are not entirely liberal, by the way. It has to do with a fat person pointing a finger at someone else about what they're eating. Rush is a hypocrite. He would be one if he were liberal, too.

Wonk
Wonk

Your insinuation that Michelle Obama is telling people what to eat is getting in the way of *your* reason. Michelle Obama has never, not once, ever told people what to eat. She has promoted healthy eating. Period.

Healthy eating doesn't mean you can't eat ice cream, cookies, or (gasp) ribs(!). It means that, on average, you have a reasonable caloric intake and consume food that is reasonably good for you.

Angf117
Angf117

you are WRONG.....im in the military and she has told US what to eat and what not to eat....

Mryamz
Mryamz

Its not that she is telling people what to eat. It is that she is piling on the "you can't eat salt, margarine, etc" bandwagon. She, as a liberal, is a part of the liberal institution that is imposing these regulations on our daily lives. Its the creeping intrusion on our daily lives that Rush is complaining about.. Its the elitism of do what I SAY not as I DO. It seems like every time you see the Obamas in public, they are eating all those 'unhealthy' things we are told we shouldn't be eating.

Same deal with the smoking President. Over two years of telling us not to smoke, and only just now supposedly quit (which I highly doubt based on his past 'quitting' smoking efforts).

Well, notwithstanding the fact that if you ever shudder to semi lucidity to find yourself with your face hanging out, slack-jawed and drooling and listening to Rush Limbaugh that it is time to consider the probability that you have mentally given up. I do agree that this is not the page to devote ink to the fat, fish white and flatulent one. I probably would have made a big deal of getting exercise on the slopes then eating at a place who is actively doing good things for the school and all that, how she and her daughters sat down to a big bowl of nuts and twigs then as a parting shot say something like "No matter what Rush Limbaugh thinks!"

I recently had the pleasure of hearing the First Lady speak about her mission, she never said to exclude any food. Our First Lady encourages plenty of exercise, eating fresh vegetables and exercising moderation when eating high calorie foods. That sound reasonable to me

The one thing that's going to make me quit reading Cafe Society is having politics enter it. This is two articles in a row that do that.

Please let CS remain a politics free zone.

Mantonat
Mantonat

Food is politics, Anonymous. There is seriously no way to eat a meal without government policy in some way impacting what the food is, where it came from, how much you paid for it, etc. (unless you foraged everything). I'd say that an article that mentions a local celebrity chef and some really good food she is making in the same breath as the First Lady of our country and a controversial radio personality equals a good story.

Anonymous

What an absolute load of pseudo-intellectual rubbish.

If it were an acutal "report" about what she ate, he wouldn't have made up the giant calorie and fat numbers-- but nice try there.

Guest

I cant speak for ANON, but it does NOT bother me one bit.  WHERE do you get "mean" from on a report of calorie / fat content in a meal?   She is a PUBLIC figure.  If she does not want something publicly commented, then have her stop trying to make policy, commenting on it, or eating fat laden foods in public.

Denveater
Denveater

Seems like a perfectly logical, on-point response to me.

Mantonat
Mantonat

Oh, sorry - I didn't mean to confuse you, Anonymous. I'll try to bring my pseudo-intellect down a notch or two. I'll just put it this way: does it bother you that someone on the radio would criticize a benign public figure like the first lady for having a nice dinner while on vacation in Vail? Does this seem like a news story about food in Colorado? It does to me. There's nothing really overtly political about any of it. It's just one man on the radio saying something mean about someone else. And then Cafe Society pointing out that it was in fact a fairly decent meal in terms of flavor and nutrition. Cafe Society also points out that it's possible to want to help children eat better and still occasionally indulge in a restaurant meal without being considered a hypocrite (sorry about the big word).
