Denver's five best wings

hot-wings.jpg

We can think of few better ways to eat up an afternoon or evening than ordering a pitcher of beer, then soaking up the alcohol with a pile of chicken wings, slathered with spicy buffalo sauce and dunked in a little ranch or blue cheese.

Our favorite wings are at Vine Street Pub, which takes the meaty chicken limbs, crisps them in a fryer until crackly, then slathers them in lip-stingingly spicy hot sauce or honeyed barbecue sauce, and serves them with a sharp blue cheese dressing. These wings really fly, and won the Best Wings award in the Best of Denver 2011.

There are other great wings in Denver, though. Here are four more of our favorites:

Ernie's Bar & Pizza
Ernie's makes a succulent platter of wings and drumsticks. The chicken is hot and tender in the center, with a crackly casing around the edges. We prefer them slathered in the traditional tang and zip of buffalo sauce, but the milder garlic and Parmesan coating is available, too.

Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids and Solids
Oskar Blues scored our Best of Denver award for Best Wings Challenge, thanks to the ghost pepper-infused basket of bird it serves to willing patrons who compete for free beer and T-shirts. But if you'd like your tastebuds left somewhat intact, we're also fans of the versions made with cayenne and habañero.

West End Tavern
The West End Tavern serves up a gluttonous wing challenge of its own, offering glory and freebies to anyone who can eat fifty wings in thirty minutes. It's harder than it sounds: the spicy buffalo sauce on those things produces a delightful slow burn, cooled by the obligatory blue cheese, celery and carrots on the side.

Piper Inn
This biker bar may not look incredibly inviting from the outside, but it serves up killer chicken wings in two varieties: classic buffalo-style with buttery hot sauce and Chinese-style, which are made from a secret sauce ("ancient Chinese secret," says the restaurant) that includes onions and crushed red pepper.

Colorado Beer Man offers a sixth suggestion: "My favorite wings in Colorado are at the Wing Hut in Longmont, 510 3rd Avenue."

If you've got other favorites, tell us about them in the comments.

Willy's Wings in Morrison is still the hands down winner for me! I don't need a fancy table or beer to enjoy my wings, just extra ranch & lots of napkins :)

Wow can't believe not one mention of "Buffalo Bill's Hot Wings to Go", over on 1st and Acoma. They got the best wings hands down. They must be doing something right, since its been there since 1986.

I've eaten wings at most of the places listed and still have yet to find wings as good as the Thunderbird lounge in Lowry off Quebec. Their Jack Daniels wings are fantastic. Spicy and VERY flavorful!

Wing wagon in conifer and Willys wings in Morrison. I love both of those places and I live in Wash Park and drive all the way up there just for wings...

Whoa - a best wings article and no mention of Luciano's Pizza & Wings on Broadway? Blasphemy! As a native Upstate New Yorker, Luciano's has the only wings that hang with the real stuff from back home.

Well, I am not much of a fan of the much hyped Marco's Coal Fired Pizza. Pizza - meh. But, oh boy, any list of the best wings in Denver that doesn't include Marco's just ain't right. They are THE BEST.

Highland Tap and Burger has a really good plate of wings. They smoke theirs, which really adds another layer of flavor. Definitely not Buffalo style, but excellent nonetheless.

Willy's Wings are great no question, perfect when coming back from Red Rocks but I think Old Chcaigo has the best wings in all of Denver. All Drummies, good size most of teh time, the sauce has the tand and heat you want but the butter flavor in the finish. Always plenty of sauce and all the extras. I asked and the sauce is made in house, it defintley does tastes great!

I've got to agree with this vote. Willy's is the top of my list, as well.

Not any more. The last couple of times I have been there the wings were just run of the mill wings. They have lost what made them great.

They were my favorite for years but something changed. Sad.

Luciano's is terrible...seriously, they market their wings as "hard".....sounds delicious.(@__@)

Vine St. Pub has some damn good wings, if only because they are twice the size that other wing places serve
