Botto Italian Grill spot could become a Mexican restaurant

While we finish compiling our Restaurant roll call for June -- a compilation of all the openings and closings over the past month -- Cafe Society has also been checking up on the status of some projects announced long ago.

Botto Italian Grill, for example, which was originally supposed to open in December 2010 at 4001 Tejon Street.

When the project was announced last fall by Michelle and Steve Gelman, they'd already closed their original Gelman's restaurant at 2911 West 38th Avenue and replaced it with the Boston Fish Shack. But they shut down that joint a year ago and subleased the space; today it's occupied by the Stingray).

At the time they said they wanted to focus on opening Botto, an upscale Northern Italian restaurant, in a building they'd bought at 40th and Tejon Sreet.

While the outside of that address has seen a major rehab and there's been lots of work done inside, Botto itself shows no signs of materializing. In fact, we hear that the spot will now become a Mexican restaurant -- which it was, long ago, when Benny Armas put a short-lived, northwest Denver outpost of Benny's Restaurante y Cantina here.

Armas is now looking at opening a second restaurant in Littleton -- although not anytime soon.

Watch for our Restaurant roll call of ventures that actually opened in June here on Cafe Society tomorrow.
