Reader: Is adding an automatic gratuity a dirty, slutty practice?

• I think you never been in Miami, NY, Vegas must of the places has gratuitty inclued, the reason is 70% tip 10% or less, no matter if you are the hot girl or provide the best service, thats the way it works, people dont tip enough. We bartender deserve at list 15%, our dalary is 4.25( Miami) we can't survive with that!!?? I sell no less then 12k behind the bar with another 2 girls 8pm to 6am, made around 500-600 at night, an without grat inclued I will make barely 250.... Do think about!!!!???

• Dudes! It was a big party, the waitress was kind enough to split up the tabs! People like to make assumptions about that which they know nothing about.  

• So, servers don't keep all the money they're tipped out for themselves. 90% of the time in a normally functioning restaurant, they tip out a percentage of their sales to support staff. Depending on the restaurant, this can run all the way up to 8%. So say you have a huge party, they all pay separate tabs and some pay cash, and no one really adds up who is tipping, a server can be left with maybe $5 on a $100 tab. It's not that their service wasn't good, it's that once parties get large, people often get so wrapped up in splitting their portions, that they forget to add in the tip. So if that server has to tip out $8 on that $100 tab, it actually COST them $3 for that table to sit in their section. Waiters and waitresses do NOT go to work to PAY to wait on people. The gratuity on large parties is to ensure that they don't get screwed over. They're there to work, not gamble. If the server was worth more than 20%, people usually tip on top of an added gratuity. If you were going to tip over 20%, don't let them covering their behinds (like they should) stop you... that's petty.

• I've never had this happen to me and I go there regularly. I wonder if the person who made this claim works for another bar nearby.

• Oh no Mr. Barnes, every single restaurant and bar in denver has started adding an automatic 18.75% gratuity to just your check, we have your photo taped up in the kitchen like a food critic to know when you come in.  We know to look out for your cheap self and the desire to drink a 21$ bottle of wine while still waiting on your beck-and-call, hand-over-fist.

• I've had it happen at The Hornet.  We had a group of six, yes, but it was late night and we just wanted a few drinks and snacks.  She added gratuity on a bill totaling $20.  Really?  You don't think we would have given you more than $4? After that, we certainly didn't.
