Want to work for Troy Guard? TAG's mass exodus opens up a swell of job opportunities

Do you have what it takes to work for Troy Guard at TAG?

Last Thursday, a staggering number of employees who work at TAG, Troy Guard's restaurant on Larimer Square, walked off the floor (and line), or handed in their two-week notices after news broke that Guard and Leigh Sullivan, his wife (soon to be ex-wife) and business partner had split up. Sullivan, for her part, washed her hands of TAG as well as TAG|RAW BAR, the second space that the two opened this spring in the subterranean Larimer Square Walkway. The walkout, which left Guard scrambling to fill positions at TAG, resulted in a one-night closure of TAG|RAW BAR. And it left TAG with a lot of job vacancies, which are now posted on denver.craigslist.org.

Coincidentally, we've been getting a flood of e-mails from unemployed local chefs, servers and bartenders asking us to let them know if we hear of restaurant-related job opportunities. As it turns out, TAG is hiring a general manager, sous chef, bartender/cocktail artist, hostess, catering and events manager and service staff -- but the application process isn't as simple as submitting a resume: Each position also requires you to answer a series of questions, one of which asks you to name your favorite restaurant, and why. When I interviewed Guard for my weekly Chef and Tell chat, I asked him which Denver restaurant was his favorite. His answer? Wazee Supper Club.

There wasn't any ball to drop - It's common knowledge that Troy's wife created the Denver Five primarily as a way to promote her husband and their restaurant, and it worked beautifully. Even before the Denver Five, she's the reason anyone even knows who Troy is. He was a virtual nobody in Denver before he met her. I'm sure she's thinking "I made you, little man, and now I can umake you."

I normally don't voice opinions via this type of venue....but first of all as a business owner, you put your crap aside and put the business first, like you would a child. Shame on Ms. Sullivan for involving the staff, shame on Mr. Guard for sleeping with a staff member. Poor me, customer, went into tonight and the vibe was totally different, cocktails not the same, I have never been told no at Tag and tonight I was told, I'm sorry we don't give three sliders, say something like I can give you four and you can share. To bad for the customers.

with all this reality tv going on, this article does seem apropos. i mean, people of all ilk can jump on the wagon. purely as a reflexsive 1990's thing, my first thought was "do even chef's have private lives?" lest we all forget impeachment followed that.

i then moved to two more serious questions: whom do i feel worse for?: 1) the people that mr guard hurt, or 2) the person who felt the compulsion to rush to press with it. i feel bad for both.

Well at least something good (employment for those who may not have had the chance otherwise) has come out of what has up to now become nothing more than a very public soap opera that probably could have been handled much better by all involved.
