Twisters Burgers and Burritos will open a fourth Colorado location on East Evans Avenue

Twisters Burgers and Burritos, the Albuquerque-based fast-casual chain with a New Mexican menu and seventeen outposts, crossed the border into Colorado a couple of years ago, opening shops in Parker, Lakewood and Aurora. And now the company is getting ready to open a fourth Denver-area spot, planting a Twisters in the DU neighborhood, just a block away from the first Chipotle, the original Denver fast-casual burrito concept.

Similarities between the two fast-casual chains end at serving burritos, though -- and even the burritos are different. The Twisters menu features hand-held and smothered options, stuffed with beans and cheese or carne adovada. The restaurant's signature burrito is topped with french fries and smothered with New Mexican green or red chile.

The company also features a lineup of burgers covered with bacon, cheese or green chile or served open-face and blanketed with red chile. And those staples are supplemented by several more New Mexican staples, including enchiladas, Indian tacos, a bevy of breakfast items and, um, corn dogs.

The first Twisters was opened by Gary Hines and Ray Ubieta in 1997. The newest location, says an employee, should open within the next week.
