Sugar House has changed hands, but it's still business as unusual

Mayor Michael Hancock celebrates his first hundred days in office today. Compared to the controversy that marked the last few days before the June mayoral runoff -- when the web and talk shows were full of never-proven rumors that Hancock had been a client of Denver Players, a prostitution business -- those hundred days have been pretty quiet.

And now comes word that Scottie Ewing, once the focus of a Westword cover story and the former owner of Denver Players who was outed as a source on the Hancock rumors, has quietly sold Sugar House, the burger joint/swinger spot he opened in 2006.

The building at 1395 West Alameda Avenue that houses Sugar House had gone on the block this spring for $1,200,000; at the time, Ewing said that his real estate partner was interested in moving on to other projects, and that he wanted to focus on a club he was opening in Las Vegas. But that was before the Denver Players story broke, and Ewing reported that his computer with all the documents had been stolen....and Michael Hancock was elected mayor of Denver.

Ewing is still proceeding with his plans for Vegas, where he hopes to get his club open within the year. He'll move there even sooner, in early December. And while the Sugar House building has been pulled off the market, he went ahead and sold the business -- "a pretty successful business," he says -- on August 31.

The liquor license has been transferred, but Ewing still checks in with the new owner, who's put a new emphasis on Friday nights, and is doing a good job of "filling the place with a vanilla crowd," he says.

And the rest of the time, the restaurant/club is continuing business as usual....or is that unusual?

The place closed down. Someone named Kelly was supposed toĀ be running it, but it is always empty. Just a bad concept.

Their voicemail is full and no one is around. Suppose it is back for sale or closed by the state.

Has the Sugar House/Alameda Grille closed? It looks like there has been no activity there the past two weeks.

We know Kelly (the new owner)Ā and knew Scottie as well.Ā  We know for a fact that he is no longer living in Colorado and has nothing to do with the new Sugar House.Ā  We love the changes that Kelly has made and have been thereĀ 4 times since the change in ownership, twice on Saturday nights (more of the lifestyle crowd), once on a Thursday night for a private wine tasting event called "Girls Uncorked"Ā and once on Friday night for a "newbie" event for any couples interested but totally new to the idea of swinging.

We have always enjoyed our time at Sugar House especially for some of the theme night events.Ā  We have eaten there twice, and the food was very good both times.Ā  You can read unbiased reviews of Sugar House, Scarlet Ranch and other Denver Swingers Clubs and parties at http://denverswingers.org

Just went by the place and it still has Sugar House signs all over it. No interest to eat lunch at a whore house. Looked online and Sugar House is still operating their ply.

I work nearby and would love to see a real restaurant in the neighborhood. I will however never support a seedy sex store.

Clean up your act.

Checked out the place a few Saturdays ago and although there is no pool table now and beds near the dance floor are gone, it is still just a dive swingers shop with a funky smell. Not sure about the hooker thing, but there was no one under 40 out of theĀ 20 or so people lurking around.

Overall, pretty strange place with women that should wear more than they were. If you are old and not that hot.......think about your wardrobe!

We did not eat anything, but heard good things about their food. The drinks were on the high side for the type of place it is. Also, there is no parking so you will have to walk though rough areas.

We had been several years ago, just still not a cool place.

Word on the street is that the pimp, Scottie J Ewing is not going anywhere, but instead just had to fake the sale to hide the fact that he still controlled the Sugar House from the state since he has a felony record. He is at teh whole in the wall everyday and you can still get an 8 ball anytime.

Well known as the best place to by drugs, it is rather odd that the cops leave him alone.

Hate to break it to ya but I'm the real deal and not associated at all with Scottie. Come in and check it out. I found the place because I am a Realtor. It's run by a female, it's clean, no beds downstairs, no pimps, no Scottie. Food is awesome and we're open as Alameda Grille Monday through Friday 11 a.m. til Close.

Always best to get your facts straight first...come in and ask for Kelly. You'll love our food and the new change. HUGE banners outside that say, 'Alameda Grille'...you can't miss it!!!

And...Scottie is completely gone from Colorado for those who hold judgement against him.

Hope you come check us out THEN judge the new place. :)
