Colorado beer calendar: International Stout Day, porters and more stouts
The Mountain Sun string of brewpubs hopes to have its flagship operation at the Vine Street Pub in Denver up and running by February, which is also when Mountain Sun celebrates Stout Month -- one of the most anticipated beer fests of the year.
In the meantime, however, you can celebrate International Stout Day on November 3 (more on that below) or participate in Mountain Sun's Stout Month 2012 Homebrew Competition: Come up with the winning recipe, and you'll brew a six-barrel batch of it with a Mountain Sun brewer and drink it on tap with the rest of the lineup in February. Entries are due on December 18. Find all the details at www.mountainsunpub.com or on the company's Facebook page.

Denver Beer Co brings back its bronze-medal-winning champion tonight at 7 p.m. with a Graham Cracker Porter Party. "Due to popular demand, we brewed our award-winning beer again," the brewery says. The beer, a reluctant star, took the bronze at the Great American Beer Festival earlier this month. The Basic Kneads food truck will be on hand to cook up pizzas.
International Stout Day takes place today when beer lovers around the world will partake in the beer style best known for its English and Irish roots. Want to enjoy it in good company? Head over to Star Bar, which has three amazing Colorado-brewed stouts on tap -- Great Divide's Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti and Belgian Yeti, Odell Bourbon Barrel Stout -- along with Oskar Blues Brewing's Ten Fidy in cans. Oh, and the Great Divide Yeti will allegedly make a special appearance at 8 p.m. -- not that we believe in that kind of thing.
Friday, November 4
Star Bar will feature three beers on tap today from Denver's newest brewery, Wit's End, which opened in late October. The beers, Jean-Claude Van Blond, Green Man Ale and Kitchen Sink Porter, go on tap at 8 p.m., when Wit's End owner Scott Witsoe will be on hand to talk about the beer, answer questions, and hang out. The first ten people to order a pint will receive a free Wit's End pint glass; there will also be raffles for other shwag.
Dry Dock Brewing taps two casks of Cherry Stout today, one at 3 p.m. and another around 7 or 8 p.m. as part of its weekly Firkin Friday program.
Saturday, November 5
Arvada Beer Company, 5600 Olde Wadsworth, which just opened last Friday, will hold a grand opening party today and host Colorado Craft Beer Radio for a live broadcast from noon to 1 p.m.; the party runs from noon to 5 pm.
Copper Kettle Brewing will toast the winners of its homebrew competition, Chad and Whitney, today from 5 to 9 p.m. by releasing their championship beer, Hop Head, an American IPA, on draft. There will also be food from the N.Z. Smokin' Guns food truck.
The fifth annual All Colorado Beer Festival takes place today, bringing together 35 breweries, some of them small ones that tend to get overlooked. The fest is also a fundraiser; this year, it will donate 100 percent of its proceeds to three charities. The beer festival features two sessions, one from noon to 4:30 p.m. and the other from 5:30 to 10 p.m.; it takes place at the Freedom Financial Expo Center, 3650 North Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs. The cost for either session is $30 ($25 with a military ID) and includes unlimited beer samples and live music. There is also a VIP section for another $15. Odell Brewing in Fort Collins celebrates "the return of darker days with the arrival of Mountain Standard Double Black IPA," this year in four-packs of twelve-ounce bottles. The beer, named for Colorado's craggy time zone, was brewed with Colorado-grown Cascade and Chinook hops. But first, Odell is planning a "Mountain Standard Bash" at 6 p.m. tonight. The event will be held outdoors and serve as the brewery's chilly kickoff to the ski and snowboard season. There will be live music, food trucks, beer samples and ski and snowboard makers on hand. Odell will raffle off a custom snowboard by Oz Snowboards, with proceeds benefiting the Colorado State University Snowriders club.
