The sh*t-show that's the parking lot at Whole Foods (video)

Wholefoodsparkinglot.jpeg
I've been driving -- and parking -- for dozens of years in dozens of cities around the world, and aside from the time I had to drive a monstrosity of a Volvo wagon down the narrowest street in a tiny English village, the stress of which ultimately forced me to abandon the car entirely, I've never experienced anything like the shit-show that is the parking lot of the Cherry Creek Whole Foods -- singularly the worst parking lot in the city, especially during the holidays.

I was there yesterday afternoon, in fact, to pick up some Honeycrisp apples, pretzel rolls, shrimp spring rolls, coffee, half-and-half and a stinky Époisses de Bourgogne, and in between idiots driving down the parking lanes the wrong way, careening carts doubling as bumper cars, a gentleman who clearly believed that driving a Lexus entitled him to two spots rather than one, and several other muttonheads vying for the same parking wedge -- and refusing to budge -- I spent far more time in that stupid parking lot than I did in the actual store.

There are others who share my pain, including a guy who compiled a four-minute music video of a Whole Foods parking lot in Los Angeles, which is one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. Really, you gotta watch this.

If I had a nickle for every time someone talking on a cell phone in a Suburban or Escalade tried to run me down in the Whole Foods parking lot, I could almost afford to shop at Whole Foods.

Some bitch backed into my car while I was waiting for a spot one day. She took off! I was so angry I called the police, but guess what, they cant do anything because it's a private lot! Does that mean I can run her over next time I see her?

It's a real toss up, yo. CCWF has the great olive bar, but CHWF has my favorite reasoned refried bean powder in their bins. Both of their parking lots suck, however.

Exactly the reason I NEVER shop at WF Cherry Creek. Its a disaster.

You should check out the refurbished King Soopers close by (Cherry and Leetsdale I believe), they now have a partnership with the famed Murray's Cheese in NYC, and  Époisses is a lot cheaper there, and their cheese section now rivals WF's...and is cheaper all around.

CCWF is bad, the one in the video is pretty bad too, but neither compare to the nightmare that is the West Hollywood Whole Foods. There's probably 90 spots in that lot, which they share with about a dozen other businesses including a restaurant. Once you add in the very real possibility that you're flipping off Gwyneth Paltrow and then you'll have to sidle up to her at the prepared foods counter to order some quinoa salad you know you're in the Thunderdome.

This parking is my metric for measuring the next recession. If it is ever easy to get a spot here, then we are in a [big time] recession.

Right on! I had the same experience over and over that two years ago I started to park at the BBB parking lot across the Speer/1st and then used the pedestrian crossing to get to WF. Cars won't stop even when I had the walk sign and many people honked. So finally I switched my stores. I now drive 11 miles to go to the WF at I-25 and Hampden (though admittedly, I go less often compared to before). Plus with all the construction going on, on Speer (and a parked van to take photos for going over 5mph!), I am happy to avoid Cherry Creek area all-together !!!

As you probably know, you can park for free in the parking garage and get your ticket validated.

Hey, Chris--

I like that King Soopers, and I agree with you about its cheese selection, which I wrote about a few months ago: http://blogs.westword.com/cafe...

By the way, the King Soopers on Colorado on Yale also has a Murray's cheese department.

Haven't been to that one, but I cannot imagine it is worse the WF parking lot in Arlington, VA (Clarendon area).  What a CF.  Tiny, tiny and backs up traffic onto Wilson and Clarendon Blvds, hosing those up as well.  I would rather drive into DC ( a nightmare of its own) and go to the one on P Street than the Arlington WF.

And the DC area has the worst drivers ever.

Be careful of your metrics. WF's clientele is mostly Top 5% of the economic strata and they were never in the recession to start with. And WF accepts Food Stamps. So it can be concluded either ways - if a lot of people are using Food Stamps at WF then the parking lots are full and we are in big time recession.

You'd be even happier avoiding Whole Paycheck altogether! 99% of WP customers are the 1%. And Cherry Creek WP is the worst.

Sigh...

The parking lot still sucks Scott.
