2914 Coffee will soon be pouring near 25th and Federal

For five years, Anthony Davis has been a barista and manager at north Boulder's Amante, where he learned to pour shots and style out lattes with art. But this spring, the coffee enthusiast is striking out on his own closer to his Highland neighborhood home, opening 2914 Coffee at 2914 West 25th Avenue, near Federal Boulevard.

The name of his shop has more significance than the address, too. "2914 is the address of the place, but the numbers are meaningful because they're my anniversary," Davis explains. "My wife, Melissa, and I got married in Mexico on 2/9 in a symbolic ceremony, and we were legally married on 2/14. They're meaningful numbers, so we decided to keep them in our name."

And while he credits Amante for teaching him everything he knows, he also notes that his own shop will be distinct from the sleek, modern space of the Boulder mini-chain. "I wanted it to be a little more homey, with a retro, eclectic feel inside," he says. "I'll do live music when I can, plus latte art competitions and things like that. I'd like to get other shops in the neighborhood involved in the scene." Plus, Davis graduated with a degree in studio art, so he'll be using 2914 as his own gallery, rotating his paintings through.

In that space, the barista plans to serve coffee and espresso from Kaladi Brothers, a local roaster, plus tea, Italian sodas, ice cream and pastries. Eventual plans include "possibly sandwiches, and maybe liquor, too," he notes.

Right now, though, he's just concentrating on getting the place ready to pour. Davis says construction, which began yesterday, is slated to conclude at the beginning of March. "We're looking at a mid-March opening," he says.
