Readers: Gabor's is closing? Noooooooooooooo!!!

Gabor's could be issuing last call soon.

The news broke yesterday that Gabor's, the beloved joint on East Thirteenth, will close a few months from now to make way for the Marion Street Tavern, a new bar by Sam Roots, who owns the Providence Tavern in Edgewater. "I don't want to give too much away right now," Roots told Lori Midson, "but I can tell you that we're going to completely redo the space and make it a really cool old-style neighborhood saloon with a menu that's similar to Providence Tavern, and we'll also have some really good draft beers that will be affordable."

The reaction was swift...and loud.

Said Nate: NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Cried Brit: "Nooooooooooooooooo!"

Well, this sounds like another horrible idea by a person who knows nothing about the neighborhood they just bought into. Sad but not surprised to see Gabor's go. It's only a matter of time before all of Denver's beautiful urban history is white-washed by subrubanite idealists hoping to fix what isn't broken and kill all culture in the process.

My best memories at Gabors? Try my twenties, mother effer! I'd rather break every stick of furniture, shatter every glass, and burn her to the ground than let those soulless bastards have her. Gabors was like one of Bukowski's girlfriends; she wasn't pretty, not by any stretch. But she had great legs (the jukebox), she could handle her booze (stiff drinks), she'd hold your head when you were sick (great burgers), and god dammit, she stuck with you, even when you called her a whore. The only thing I've ever loved unconditionally is dying. And it saddens me more than I can say.

oh that's nice, then they will be out of a job...but the bar will be doing just fine.

Talked to the Gabor's staff last night, actually. Mandy told me that they are keeping everyone on and that she is really excited for the place to get renovated. It's (unfortunately) been falling apart lately.
