No Reservations crew spotted in Denver -- but no Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain was in Denver two years ago to exercise his jaws at Biker Jim's...what's he up to now?
Two years ago, Anthony Bourdain dropped in on Denver, where he waxed rhapsodic about the blood sausage at Mizuna and wrapped his jaws around wieners at Biker Jim's, the footage of which was nicely packaged in an episode of No Reservations.

And if the sightings of Bourdain's film production crew, which were gallivanting around town last weekend, are any indication, then it sounds like Bourdain will be featuring the Mile High City in an upcoming episode.

Mandi Clement, who, along with her husband, Tony, are running Roam, the former Wild Catch, were in the house on Saturday night, when Bourdain's crew waltzed in for dinner asking for a five-top. "They were great, really conversational and they really loved Tony's food," says Mandi, adding that "they ate everything on their plate." And while Mandi says the faction didn't reveal why they were roaming around Denver, we've gotten tips that they were here to scout Denver's barbecue scene. Really?

Barbecue? In Denver?

Green chile, yes. But barbecue?

In any event, Bourdain was nowhere to be seen -- and, in fact, nowhere near Denver.

Instead, Bourdain, according to the above tweet, was cruising around the streets of Baja, shoving tostadas from a street cart down this throat. Lucky son-of-a-bitch. Still, the fact that his crew was in town leads us to believe that something's afoot.

If you have insight into where Bourdain's crew was shooting over the weekend, by all means, share.

I'm a little embarassed that I piped into this conversation, because shortly thereafter, Bourdain himself settled the matter. Not investigating bbq; not dining at Roam. Any of them. From Twitter:@NoReservations Anthony Bourdain

@CafeWestword I am not in Denver. My crew is nowhere near Denver. Somebody has been taken for a ride.

Wow, if you got two personalities like Big Hoss and Bourdain in a room together that would make a great show!!  I would love to see Hoss and Bourdain tossing back bourbon.  would be great TV.

Is he still filming No Reservations or is it The Layover?

Bourdain is great, but he's got some strange stereotypes of Denver.  When he made that comment a few years back about walking down the 16th Mall, finding nothing good, and writing off Denver's whole food scene, well...how many people write off New York's food based on what they find in Times Square?  Then we were lumped into the "Heartland" episode where he hooked up with Biker Jim and Frank Bonnano...good guys with good food...but they were labeled as some kind of heroes for doing what they wanted in food wasteland.  There was never a mention of one of Denver's trifecta of chile, beer, and beef.  Now, they're looking for BBQ here?  Our food traditions are closer to New Mexico than KC for chrissakes...This is the colder edge of the US SW...making our green chile thicker and heartier than the NM style.  The cost of living, the economy, lifestyle and climate have made Denver a magnet for immigrants from Africa, Asia and Latin America who seek refuge from the old immigrant havens of NYC, Houston, DC, Philly, Chicago and LA...and our food scene reflects this.  No Reservations needs to give Denver the same time and consideration that it gave Ghana and Montana.  BBQ? c'mon!

I'd gladly chauffeur Mr. Bordain to Country Time BBQ and then to my house for a night of drinking Leopold Bros. and Stranahan's and talking shit about the 16th St. Mall.

If they are doing BBQ, they must come up north to Georgia Boys in Longmont. But, they better get there early before they "run out" and close up shop earlier than would be expected.

Yeah I'm not buying this. What they walked in and said hey we're Tonys production crew! It was only a couple years ago when he stated on No Reservations that he would never come to Denver.

Why eat at Roam? Get a glimpse of controversy and why restaurant owners like those shouldn't be in business? I wouldn't put it past them, creating a rumor like this.

"Lucky son-of-a-bitch."

Werd. Bourdain will fly in via private jet, take a limo to location and do his five minute spiel.

They all, Tony included, recently spent a week in the BBQ capital of the world, Kansas City visiting the best BBQ joints around.

"Scouting Denver's barbecue scene" would be about like scouting the Mexican food scene in Des Moines.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There are tons of great spots in Denver.

My guess is that the crew was overheard talking about another city's bbq and the assumption was made that the conversation about Denver. Still, between Jabo's and Country Time, I'm sure Bourdain would be happy - and we wouldn't have to tell him about all the miserable, mushy, over-sauced, smokeless pork that passes as good bbq around here.

Bourdain was in Denver two years ago, Aaron, for both his stand-up and a No Reservations piece (hence the photo with Biker Jim that leads this bit).  I'm pretty sure Tony Clement cooked for him, and in all likelihood either struck up a rapport or impressed the crew enough that they'd seek him out while in town again.I haven't dined at Roam yet, but no one can deny Tony Clement's cooking acumen.

To be clear, no one at Roam started any rumors. I was tipped off by someone else entirely that the crew was in town to sniff out barbecue restaurants.
