Pho 96, a brother to Pho 95, opens in the former Chopsticks space

Pho! It's what's for breakfast, lunch and dinner at Pho 96.
Everyone's favorite pho parlor -- Pho 95, which has locations on South Federal Boulevard and Streets at SouthGlenn -- has a new sibling. The space at 2990 West Mississippi, which was the original Chopsticks China Bistro (and, after that, one of those sub-par $1.25-a-scoop Chinese travesties), is now Pho 96.

The restaurant, which trumpets a menu that's very similar to that of Pho 95, is owned by Tony Le -- the brother of Aaron Le, who runs Pho 95 -- and his wife, Lihn Lam, both of whom did time at the Pho 95 on Federal. "Tony used to cook at Pho 95, and most of the recipes are the same," says Lam, adding that her husband wakes up at 4 a.m. every morning to make the pho broths. "It takes five hours to make the stocks, which may explain why he never cooks at home," she jokes.

Tony Lee (left), who used to run Pho 95 with his brother, Aaron, now has his own pho house.
The name, says Lam, is representative of the year that Tony came to the United States: 1996. "In Vietnam, we always choose a number, rather than a name, for the pho places, and 1996 really means something to Tony, so that's why we chose it."

The space, while modest, has been completely redone since the scoop joint shuttered: New carpeting, a fresh paint job, new tables and kitchen equipment outfit the quarters, and while there's no liquor license (one is planned for the future), Pho 96 pours bobas and Vietnamese coffee, brewed individually using perforated-metal "phin" filters. "They're very slow," admits Lam, "but the coffee is excellent, and Tony is really, really good at making it."

Pho 96 is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, For more info, call 303-568-9262.

First of all this is a blog for Pho 96 not a soap opera for us to judge on. As good food critics we go to the restaurant that we visit eat and voice ours opinion on the service, the atmosphere, and most important of all the FOOD. The people on the blog I’m sure, does not have the education of a judge nor being a judge to give the owner (Tony) the death penalty.  We neither the law enforcement nor a family member to REALLY have known what did happen, right? The only thing we do know is how was the service, the cleanliness, the envirment and of course the food people. Let go to the food, shall we?                 First of all to the people who said that the food at Pho 96 is bad, obviously they NEVER been to this restaurant before. The food at this place is awesome and the service is even better. To this day Jan 12, 2012 they had been open this restaurant for just 1 full month. Even for a very short amount of time they have gain a lot of popularity among the Pho community. When I came to this place on a Tuesday morning IT WAS PACK with customer and I have to park my car on the other side of the road.  (Pho 555 parking lot) Let me ask the entire Pho 95 fan out there, do you like to go to a place that is so crowded that they make have to wait for 15 and sometime 30 minute for a table? Then after you got a table then the waiter RUSH to get their order( not to mention a lot of time they forgot your order)then you have to HURRY UP eat your food and go, so they can clean your table for other customer to seat down?  How can one person REALLY ENJOY their food if you being RUSH all the time? I don’t know about you but I like to come to restaurant, sit down right away, look over the menu, order and enjoy my food that I’m pay for.  I don’t care where Tuan Le (aka Tony) came from, who he relates to or even what happen between him and his brother. All I care about this place is the food and the service. By the way I give this place on food (5 stars) service (5 stars) atmosphere (5 stars) parking (3 stars) because it too small, need more parking lots.

I agree that the writer should've verified the facts with Pho 95 before stating that they're in any way associated.  Yes, the owners may be brothers, but the fact is that the restaurants are totally separate entities. These are probably both good restaurants, but neither one is the original "creator" of Pho as there are about two dozen other Pho restaurants serving this vietnamese dish.  The difference is only made up in the service and presentation.  The main thing I loved about Pho 96 was the soap-opera drama going on last Friday when a slutty philippine ho got busted for banging the husband of a vietnamese wife...based on the vietnamese beating down the US army in the 70's...I'd say the philippine lady better watch out! Dinner and a show? beat that Pho 95!!

Who cares about the problems of relationship of Pho 95 and Pho 96 ! The comments are solely for the quality of the service, not for personal business. These comments just made me laughed !!! Let the customers do the judgement.

As a friend of the family I can say for a fact that Tony Le and Pho 96 have no relation to Aaron Le and his Pho 95 restaurants. The statement, "Tony used to cook at Pho 95, and most of the recipes are the same," is a lie. What IS true is that the brothers' uncle and dad cooks and has always cooked at the original Pho 95. It's a shame that Lori did not contact the Pho 95 to corroborate the statements Linh Lam has made.

If Pho 96 was truly related to the original than why did they open so close to the original, in direct competition to Pho 95? This is just an attempt by Tony and Lam to take credit for the hard work of the people at Pho 95. Do not accept any imitators. Pho 95 is the best!

The owner of pho 96 is giving their customers a false advertisement. Just to let all the Pho 95 fans that PHO 95 IS NOT RELATED OR AFFILIATED WITH pho 96!!!. Lying to their customers is totally not acceptable! Pho 95 will ALWAYS be the BEST & will ALWAYS be #1!!

Why would he want to open it up so close to Pho 95? Should have picked a different location, perhaps one downtown. ;)

I wish him good luck in his new venture.

Te-bowl: Did you read the article? It's all about telling people about a new restaurant and its relation to pho 95....that's why all the comments are about whether or not they're related...there is NO MENTION in the article about how the food is...yes it mentions what they serve, but this is NOT a REVIEW of the service, Pho, or any of the other dishes served here.  This FULLY explains why we were all commenting on the drama/relation or lack-there-of between 96 and 95.  Thanks for the review, though...but it does not belong here, try Yelp or Google Maps.

Each one the restaurants are unique, its not about imitations,I've been to all three of them,95,95II,96,and they all are Great, the only difference i saw was the price difference on 95II on his dishes but that was understandable, and so as long as their is slandering towards another restaurant than let the public decide,Same Great Broth,Service,Price,They're all family owned and it should stay that way so each restaurant has helps each other,I've seen waitstaff go to Tony's,Aarons,Amy's.... This whole family still is a Family and will always will be

Sounds like somebody is scared of loosing business! Tony is a great guy pho 96 is GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE and everybody knows that since Aaron left, for the same reasons, pho 95 has went downhill! You feel like a burden when eating there! Why would you come up here and speak badly on your family? Wouldn't you want good for them?

Ninety six is nothing but a cheap imitation of pho 95. The original creators of the food remain at pho 95. The great taste and friendly service remain at pho 95, which explains why ninety six opened a block away, they think that if they hang with the original they may fool people into thinking ninety six is good. If they are then they should be able to stand on their own and quit trying to capitalize on pho 95's prestige.

They are not the owner of pho 95, if they the owner of pho 95 why left pho 95 & open pho 96? This is a shout out for everyone out there that pho 96 is giving their customers a false advertisement!

I agree,I've been to all 3 restaurants and know gotten to know the whole family well and i show no favoritism and they are all on equal ground with me,but it sounds like someone wants the other businesses to go under and not wish them well,I see help sometimes from 95 go to help Tony out,... Tony is a Great Guy and always has been
