Contest alert: Win gift certificates to the Bull & Bush and Steve's Snappin' Dogs

Six years of slinging wieners! That's the milestone that Steve's Snappin' Dogs will mark this weekend, Friday through Sunday, when the hot dog hut on East Colfax celebrates its anniversary with lots of freebies, including Twinkies and cupcakes. "We've came a long way since our humble beginnings serving up our famous Thumann's hot dogs from a food truck at the Cherry Creek Farmers' Market," says owner Steve Ballas, who's spent the past several weeks working on new menu items, including a damn good chili.

And behind the scenes, he's also been scheming with the beer geeks at the Bull & Bush to introduce a Steve's Snappin' Dogs amber ale to his beverage roster -- and that's where you come in. You can try that beer for free, as well the joint's dogs and chili, plus drink for free at the Bull & Bush if you have the smarts to identify the secret ingredient in Ballas's new brew.

Beginning today, we'll roll out clues to assist you in your efforts.

If you think you know what the secret ingredient is, post your answer in the comments section below. We'll continue to run clues throughout the week, and we'll announce the winner -- the first person to guess correctly -- by noon on Friday. Please make sure you leave a valid e-mail address so we can contact you if you're victorious. The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Steve's Snappin' Dogs, as well as a $25 gift certificate to the Bull & Bush.

Here's clue No. 1: The genus species of the secret ingredient is capsicum annuum.

And clue No. 2: It's neither a ghost nor a bell.

And clue No. 3: The origin of the secret ingredient can be traced back to Brazil.

Ready, set, go!

Probably Pasilla or Anaheim chili peppers. There's no heat to the beer at all, so it would likely have to be a mild chili pepper.
