Happy birthday to Marczyk Fine Foods and the return of Burger Night

"Customers did not quite understand us," Barbara Macfarlane remembers. "Many people did not think we would make it and said so. One competing grocer even offered to buy us out!"

Clearly, Marczyk Fine Foods is here to stay, and tonight it kicks off its ten-year anniversary with this year's inaugural Burger Night, grilling beef from Niman Ranch and serving it on brioche buns from City Bakery, with all the fixings, for $6.99.

Burger night will run from 5 to 7 p.m. every Friday throughout the summer (weather permitting) at both the original store at 770 East 17th Avenue and the new store that opened last summer at 5100 East Colfax Avenue.

The partners -- husband-and-wife team Pete Marczyk and Macfarlane, who opened the first store together, and Pete's brother Paul, who joined later -- debated offering something different at the Colfax location on Friday nights. "Barbecued pork and chicken, fried chicken, a clam bake, we thought about doing all kinds of things," Pete says. "But we're known for our burgers, people love them."

The specials continue at both stores on Saturday, April 28, when everything -- including the stock in the two wine shops -- will be discounted 10 percent.
