Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, Salt unveils a $25 "Millionaire's Margarita"

On May 5, you'll be able to pick your reason to drink: Not only is it the date of this year's Kentucky Derby, which is our favorite reason to suck down mint juleps while wearing a funny hat, but it's also Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that always brings Denverites out to drink, usually to the tune of pitchers upon pitchers of margaritas.

This occasion is usually best observed at whichever bar pours the cheapest booze, but if you're feeling spendy this year, you might want to head up to Salt in Boulder. The restaurant is celebrating with a new drink called the "Millionaire's Margarita" that will set you back a cool $25 per drink.

The reason the cocktail costs so much, explains Yuri Kato, director of Tequila Corrido, is because it's made with Corrido Extra Añejo tequila, a deep, rich spirit that spends three years aging in Maker's Mark barrels and goes on the (top) shelf for a price that's cheaper than most extra añejos, but still enough that you'll want to think twice before dumping it into the blender with margarita mix. Salt bar manager Adrian Sutevski mixed that with fresh strawberries, serrano peppers, lime juice, agave and housemade chipotle syrup to make a libation that's tart, sweet and spicy -- and probably not one that you're going to want to buy rounds of, unless you really are a millionaire.

Like the sound of the flavors but feeling cash poor? The restaurant is also pouring a half-priced version of the drink; the Fresca con Fuego swaps out Casa Noble Reposado tequila for the extra añejo for those who want something a little lighter and thriftier.

Salud.
