The Izakaya Den/Pearl Street Grill deal moves forward...slowly

In January, the owners of Izakaya Den announced that they had entered into a very involved deal with BW Holdings, the company that controls the Wynkoop/Breckenridge group of breweries and restaurants, agreeing to swap Izakaya's current location -- a stand-alone building at 1518 South Pearl Street -- for the now-closed Pearl Street Grill spot at 1477 South Pearl. But "swap" may not be the right word. Last Friday the Denver Business Journal published the financial notices on the deal, which indicate that Izakaya owners Yasu and Toshi Kizaki agreed to buy the Pearl Street Grill space from BW Holdings for $1 million while selling the Izakaya Den building to BW for $3 million.

Sometime this fall, Izakaya Den will take over the former Pearl Street Grill address (which will also boast a new kitchen shared with Sushi Den); it will stay open in its current location until then. And after that move, BW will introduce an as-yet-undisclosed new concept in the former home of Izakaya.

"We are going to take all of the good things from Amato's and incorporate them," says Lee Driscoll of BW, which also owns Ale House at Amato's. "We want to do something original there, so we're going to take our time and really figure it out."

Before that happens, though, the company plans to renovate and remodel three of its other properties: Gaetano's; the Wazee Supper Club, which will get a new kitchen and more downstairs seating; and the Wynkoop itself, which will get a complete overhaul, similar to what BW just did at the Breckenridge Ballpark Pub.
