For the first time ever, Zagat Survey will unleash a Colorado-only restaurant guide...edited by yours truly

Screen shot 2012-04-23 at 9.14.57 PM.png
It's been called the "burgundy bible" for zealous restaurant nerds, and for the first time since Tim and Nina Zagat (pronounced Zuh-GAT) launched their Survey in 1979, Colorado -- the whole state -- is getting its very own Zagat restaurant ratings guide, which is a big deal considering that the Mile High City and the mountain resort areas have always been relegated to single digit pages in the all-encompassing America's Top Restaurants guide. (Disclosure: I'm the Colorado editor for both America's Top Restaurants and the forthcoming Colorado Survey).

And for the past several weeks, I've been compiling a monster-roster of restaurants -- more than 1,000 -- that span the state, from Denver to Durango, and from now until May 6, you can vote (and comment) on those restaurants, which include everything from dim sum parlors like Star kitchen to taquerias and burger barns to Frasca Food & Wine and Fruition. In addition, surveyors -- that's you, people -- can also spout off on state dining trends: how much we typically tip, how often we eat out and general food and dining trends, like sustainability.

Voting is free at www.zagat.com/rateColorado, and surveyors have the opportunity to weigh in on food, decor and service for each individual restaurant. And if you vote before May 6, you'll be entered into Zagat's Witty Surveyor Contest, where the most pithy, descriptive and clever comments will win $400 to spend on a night out in Denver or a Samsung Galaxy Android Tablet.

In addition, the guide will include a "Best Bang for Your Buck" list, which trumpets
restaurants with the best food for the lowest prices.

Ready, set, vote!

Dear Lord./ But I do AGREE WITH EVERYONE HERE!.......They Totally Should Talk about the City LITTLETON in this guide! It is the BIGGEST CITY Between Denver and Salt Lake, probably this side of the Mississippi! And it has soooo much to offer as a city ( Hiking, Wineries, Dry Grass, Wet Grass [well, when it rains], houses, sidewalks, ethnic people, pretty much everything).    But Seriously.....I think all of you should talk about Grand Junction more, coz that city has gotten NO mention so far! So I guess I'll be the first, I cant believe it! First and Formost, BIN 505 MEALBAR Is Grand Junction's best restaurant, Seriously, you cant go to Grand Junction and not eat at BIN 505, Thats B.I N. Then 505. FREE ADVERTISING Guys, you deserve it!!! HILLARY SWANK, P.S. I LOVE YOU GUYS!

Bin 707 is great because they source food from local farmers! A new trend, up and coming out here. I'm from Northern Cali., out in Grand Junction Colorado to help bring this local, and sustainable food movement to the community.  So keep you eyes and ears out for us, we'll be hitting the streets soon with our mobile food truck that is all about hand making fresh food, directly sourced out of Colorado! http://www.facebook.com/farmfreshcafe

Why isn't Grand Junction mentioned? Bin 707 Foodbar is number one and should be noticed and appreciated, as well as other restaurants in the Grand Valley.

Embarrassing to pimp a restaurant like this so much, must be a really shitty place if this is the only attention you can muster up for it.

pimpinainteasy
pimpinainteasy

pimpin aint easy - but statistically speaking based on pure numbers a city of gj size, presence and economical influence for the state of colorado should be worthy of a zagat review - regardless...

What about Grand Junction?

No, Grand Junction is not a food mecca, BUT we do have notable restaurants : No Coast Sushi, Suehiro's Japanese Restaurant, Bin 707 Foodbar, Pablo's Pizza, for starters. Each of the establishments mentioned has garnered rave reviews from friends and family who have come to visit us and dined there. I would put them up against ANYTHING in Aspen (we have not found a decent place to eat in Aspen in the 15 years we've been visiting there).

This is GREAT news and I am so proud ofColorado and its continuing growth in the food world!! HOWEVER!!!! PleasePlease Please take a second look at Grand Junction, CO / Mesa County.  Myhusband and I own a restaurant (BIN 707 Food Bar – www.bin707.com-  in Grand Junction, CO and opened here for areason-  the overwhelming agriculturalproducts readily available and the fact that it is just a few miles from one ofColorado's biggest wine communities.  Farms + Vineyards are twomajor ingredients for an amazing restaurant, not to mention an incrediblytalented chef who worked and trained with some of Denver’s top chefs (KevinTaylor & Sean Yontz)!  Josh Niernberghas created a culinary masterpiece in Grand Junction COLORADO and I reallythink it is worth a second, third and forth look!!  So please include this agriculturally richcommunity in part of this Zagat COLORADO adventure!!  Grand Junction has made leaps andbounds!!  Help us keep up themomentum!!  Thanks for listening and foryour consideration!!  Also take a look atthis recognition Telluride gave our little restaurant - http://www.tellurideinside.com...-   OR - http://www.watchnewspapers.com...- OR - http://www.gjfreepress.com/art...

Come try BIN707 Food Bar – 225 North 5th Street, Grand Junction CO 81501 foryourself I can guarantee you Josh Niernberg will not disappoint!!!  Thanks again!!

I have lived here most of my life and I can tell you the food here is better now than it has ever been. My sister and her husband live inn Cherry Creek and go ouot to dinner all the time. She thinks that EC's Asian Station is as good as it get when it comes to Asian food. Bin 707 (Best burger ever!!), 626 On Rood, Il Bistro Italiano, Inaris Bistro, The Winery, Enzo's, W.W. Peppers Moulin Rouge are all very good. I had one of the best fresh fish dinners at 626 on Rood that I have ever eaten anywhere, and that includes San Francisco, Northern California and the Oregon Coast. If you have not tried Hyeongje Korean Restaurant on North Avenue yet, you should. It is some of the best Korean food I have ever had.

I've lived here for 6 years and didn't know Korean food existed in grand junction! See how much we need zagat!?

Rock, thanks so much for the reply! Yes I also love 626 on Rood and have enjoyed many of their delicious creative dishes!  It is one of my husband and I's favorite restaurants and visit them as often as possible (which is tough when your in the restaurant business!).  We have also dined at Hyeongje Koren Restaurant and had great meals.  Grand Junction has come a long way and noticing some of these very talented chefs is so important to keep the food scene momentum growing!  Thanks for your support of locally owned and operated restaurants. It is a tough business and a true labor of love most the time!  Anyways thanks again for your support and comments!!! See you at BIN!!

I'm a Foodie through and through, lived in Austin for several years and was apart of the food truck movement there. I've traveled (and eaten) all over this country and Bin 707 in Grand Junction is slinging the best burger I've ever had. It beats out anything I've had at the Cherry Cricket or Highland and even trumps 4505 Meats in San Fran, Junction has talent, just because we're small town doesn't mean we aren't legit.

C'mon, does any actually believe that there are dozens of people from Grand Junction regularly reading a Denver newspaper's food blog, and they all happened to show up to comment today?

I haven't seen this many blatantly bogus comments since the last Virgilio's post. Does he have an ownership stake in Bin 707 or something?

Maybe you should try something out before you trash it. GJ is the largest town between Denver and salt lake, it's worth including for that reason alone. Additionally, the Colorado national monument is on the brink of national park designation, and GJ is already a travel hub for skiers headed to Telluride and Silverton, not to mention Drs and support staff at st mary's hospital who travel from all over the country to be here. Don't they deserve a guide too? FYI... Facebook is kind of a big deal.

I'm falling off my chair here in fits of giggles. Grand Junction is NOT a food mecca, not by a long shot, but all of you posting comments out of sheer desperation sure are funny. My guess is that until this post, you had no idea what Zagat even was. That may change because of this, but the fact that Grand Junction is a shithole with no good food remains the same.

Josh Niernberg
Josh Niernberg

This is not a contest as to who has the better food. This simply has to do with a TRAVEL PUBLICATION listing a town with 150,000 people, the same place that that the rest of the state looks towards for wine and produce... the fact is the dining scene here has changed, but regardless of who has the best food, these are responses to the editor of the publication in an attempt to list the better restaurants IN SAID AREA. Grand Junction/ Mesa county has an airport, wineries, shopping, electricity.... and yes restaurants. I can say with absolute certainty, that you, nor anyone of the negative remarks about Grand Junction have actually been to said restaurants to compare them with other towns that have made the Zagat Guide such as say Windsor, Idaho Springs, and Salida.

I am not contesting what was and has been the norm in GJ I am saying it is ignorant and irresponsible to not list the LARGEST CITY between salt lake and denver.

Exactly what was said to Jon S below, only more: It's sad you feel you have to insult an entire community on a blog posting. Your comment is disrespectful and in poor taste. Just because the food culture in Grand Junction hasn't been comparable to other metropolitan areas in the past doesn't mean it will always stay that way. In fact, it appears that a lot of people are supportive of our food culture, evidence of change already. Have an open mind would you, not all of us are back wood hicks. I've lived in Stockholm, Sweden, Santa Fe, NM and San Francisco... there are good places to eat here and there are shitty places to eat here, just like anywhere.

Grand Junction has a lot of good restaurants.  Palisade and Fruita too.  All of the restaurants Josh listed are exceptional.  And there are many more.  This valley is unique in it's talent and self sustainability.  Definately a candidate.

Helllooooo?  How can the largest city between Denver and Salt Lake not be in the guide?  We're a huge tourist area for bikers and sight-seers!  Bin 707, Hot Tomato, Pablo's, No Coast, Il Bistro, awesome places in Palisade...what the heck?

Hey- What about Grand Junction? We have great restaurants and are a major tourist center with Wineries, Mountain Biking, Hiking and Dining.

Ron Beach

Steve is absolutely right. Thousands upon thousands of front range "tourists" flock to Grand Junction and the Grand Valley year around. These folks need to know about our great restaurants and wineries too. Besides those eating establishments already mentioned, I'd like to add Enzo's, Pantusco's, Dream Cafe and Nagy McGees to the list of places to be reviewed by Zagat. There are many more too.

The restaurants Josh noted, Moulin, Bin 707 The Winery, ii Bistro we have many great places here!

What about Grand Junction, there 150,000 people that eat at restaurants in Mesa County, if nothing else, Bin 707 Foodbar, 626 on Rood, No Coast Sushi, The Hot Tomato, The Winery, Caroline's at the Wine Country Inn and Il Bistro Italiano (just to name a few...) are equally as good if not better than most of the restaurants on the Zagat List!!!
