Reader: X marks the spat for Denver restaurant coverage

denvermap.jpg
While controversy continues to rage over the packed parking situation in LoHi, let's return to a bigger picture: the geographic area Westword covers, and why we continue to refer to the entire metro area as simply Denver.

Have we gone too far? Why not refer to the area as New California instead? Or Fort Denver Springs? Or the Seven County Conurbation?

Says youroverlordsinDenver:

I think Denver should be able to co-opt anything great from the surrounding areas, since Denver is the kingdom, and all you peasants on the outer edges owe us tribute.

Then there's this from Anyn:

Listen, you small minded small thinkers. Does NYC include flushings?? Just because it is the largest part of queens?? No, god dammit!!! What the f is this??? I live in wheatridge so "I'm a Denverite"..... No you are a god damn wheatridgian. Seriously this is a city that is exponential more expensive than the suburbs or Boulder, when it comes to most commercial real estate. So no, just because the food is good does not mean it should be included against what is actually Denver. Not the f-ING metro Denver.......How about the westword move their office to Highlands Ranch. Really increase your street cred. This is lame and so are you westword for defending your poor choice of boundaries...

And Rain weighs in:

There are a lot of good things going on up in Boulder County. Good things going on in Denver proper, too. I remember past years when it felt like nothing north of Furniture Row or west of Federal was ever reviewed. I thought that was an oversight.

I don't have a problem with Westword reviewing things across the metro area as long as they don't ignore one region completely.

Still, there's got to be a limit, right? Concentrate on City and County of Denver, with occasional forays out to the counties. Loveland and the Springs are too far away in my opinion, but is Castle Rock? Evergreen?

How far is too far? Join the wide-ranging conversation already under way here. Or, if you'd rather focus on LoHi, that discussion continues here.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!

This discussion is stupid.  Westword or the Denver Post are regional papers.  It's silly to expect them to stop reporting on anything outside the borders of the city line.  That doesn't mean that Lakewood is "Denver", it just means that Lakewood is encompassed within the region covered by a Denver newspaper.  Big deal.

As someone who lives in Boulder, I don't consider myself from "Denver" nor do I consider Boulder a suburb of Denver.  But I'm not so foolish as to think it isn't part of the greater Denver Metropolitan Area.  Anyone who rides the BX to work could tell you that!

Cover whatever you want, but Niwot is nowhere close to being in "Denver", even by the most liberal of geographic standards.

Everything in Colorado is fair game except for Douglas and Elbert Counties, which really should be annexed to Oklahoma.

I personally now am a living breathing Fort-Denver-Springs-ian.  Brilliant.  Although Wheatridgian sounds pretty awesome but commute to work in Aurorasville would suck.

Please cover the entire state.  If I'm in Grand Junction, Salida, or Wray, I want to know where the delicious food is.  And I'm even willing to venture into Lakewood.  But not after dark.

The Denver Broncos' HQ is in Centennial.  Someone please alert the NFL so that the proper city can be used in its name.  I'm sick of Centennial co-opting our city name for their football team.  We should probably also get the Denver Post to stop reporting on the Broncos, since they are technically not in Denver and a newspaper is not supposed to report on anything outside the specific city and county which its readers believe it's supposed to be limited to.

Apparently I was not heavy-handed enough.  I did, however, somehow avoid the snarky response that Broncos actually play their games in Denver.

I wouldn't worry about it too much - the NFL is living on borrowed time anyway, once the numerous player concussion lawsuits start to bite, and high schools and colleges subsequently end their American Football programs as a consequence.

Such provincial thinking! You don't see more cosmopolitan places like San Francisco complaining about their Santa Clara 49ers, or Chicago and their Lake Forest Bears.

That said, re: the NYC quoted comment, funny that NYC might not be Flushings, but sure extends to Jersey when it come to their two football teams.

Speaking of provincial thinking, are you familiar with the concept of sarcasm? I may be a hayseed, but I'm pretty sure epl was employing sarcasm.

I support the idea of the Denver Post not reporting anything about the Centennial Broncos.
