A new program that will provide free meals for schoolchildren this summer starts this week, according to Mayor Michael Hancock.

Hancock was at the Curtis Park pool yesterday to announce the Summer Food Service Program, and passed out free lunches to children in the area. "This collaborative program will help ensure our most vulnerable children are receiving consistent meals throughout the summer months," said the mayor, whose office estimates that almost 12,000 children will benefit from the free meals.

The SFSP is a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which funds the program, the City of Denver, Denver Public Schools, Food Bank of the Rockies and Hunger Free Colorado, which will be serving the lunches at over ninety locations, including Whitter Elementary and La Alma Rec Center, both near downtown.

And although "school lunch" and "healthy" don't always go hand in hand, school-nutrition provider Revolution Foods promises to bring "healthy, fresh and delicious food" for fourteen SFSP sites, says Pat Donovan, Revolution's regional vice president.

The Summer Food Service Program runs until August 24, and children under 18 are eligible for free breakfasts, lunches or snacks, depending on the site. For a list of the sites and more details, visit the Hunger Free Colorado page.

I whole-heartedly agree with Realist. I also enjoy hoarding money and starving children.

?????  Passing as a kid?  No just an idiot parent who keeps procreating, but cannot and will not actually take care of those kids. but the govt will, so who cares, right?

Ignorance and Bigotry is attempting to insult someone who has an opinion different than your own. How can I be ignorant when Ive lived the situation? You sir, are most likely the one ignorant in this instance.

Nice work!  You really showed him.  Ignorance and bigotry, with a side of bacon.  I'll bet he's fat too.  Anyway you can use your powers to coax that one out?

That's a good point.  I was just wondering if they were his kids.  I didn't think he was a school kid.

The kids will be fed either way, either by the original government assistance we already pay for, or if the parents are starving their kids and using assistance for other things and the state will remove them. (I was one of these kids) All this is doing is giving already irresponsible parents another subsidy so that they can waste more money on who knows what. I have seen the card used multiple times because for some reason there seems to usually be a conversation that happens between the cashier and the individual with the card about it, so you ended up knowing whats happening if your in line behind them.It always has stood out in my mind how much stuff they can get and how most of the selection is just junk. Its almost as if they are just trying to find ways to spend it all. Then I look at what I have in my basket and think, I make 50k+ a year and I couldnt spend that much on groceries. Im pretty moderate overall, and do believe in SOME public assistance, but there seems to be no accountability or flow of service back into the community from the people that are receiving the benefits. I have never once seem a homeless person volunteer for anything, even though they seem to have a lot of time on their hands. If I can work 70 hours a week and still volunteer they can give something back for all their free handouts.

I agree.  If the parents make unwise choices we should be there to help these kids out.  We can use this opportunity to teach valuable life lessons.  That way when these kids grow up they will know that no matter how many kids you have or how tough life gets, someone else will be there to take care of you.

Right, because there's no chance that that guy is a volunteer. He's probably just some freeloader trying to pass himself off as a school kid so he can score a few cartons of free chocolate milk.

When I asked the question, I wasn't implying that you are a racist. I was hoping that you would answer, though, so we could find out just what kind of ignorance and bigotry you side with. Glad you could oblige.

So the guy in the second picture can afford an armful of tattoos but he can't afford food for his kids?
