Roostercat Coffeehouse will be within crowing distance of Rooster & Moon

"'Congratulations! Looks like you guys are opening another store!'" That's how Nicholas Bode, who founded Rooster & Moon Coffee Pub, found out about Roostercat Coffeehouse, which will soon come to roost two blocks away at 1045 Lincoln Street.

"I have mixed feelings," admits Bode, who is now in the curious position of owning one of two Golden Triangle coffee shops that have a rooster in their name and logo. "On one hand, I'm flattered, and I want to see them do well. We wouldn't be where we are if it weren't for places like Crema or Pablo's.... we can't forget that there were people doing it before us."

Colin James Floom and partner Autumn Green started calling themselves "Team Roostercat" back when they were planning to open a coffee shop on East Colfax, and the name stuck even when the location switched to Lincoln Street. "I love the Rooster & Moon, and I've spent a lot of time there," says Floom, but he believes that his shop will set itself apart.

"We're separate enough that I don't think it'll be a problem," he adds. For one thing, there's the coffee: Roostercat will use organic, fair-trade coffee from Denver roaster Coda Coffee, while Rooster & Moon brews coffee from Thornton-based Allegro, which distributes nationally. And Roostercat will have three patios to Rooster & Moon's one.

"It's going to cause confusion among our guests," Bode admits. "But my only real fear is that they'll serve crappy coffee."

Because bottom line, both men agree on one thing: An independently owned java shop is always a good thing. "In an ideal world, I'd have a coffee shop on every corner, privately owned," says Floom.

"I wish them the best, and there's plenty of room," concludes Bode.

Hmm, maybe someone should open a Paulo's Coffee at 7th and Grant.  I'm with Nicholas.  There will likely be confusion.  Think of people simply typing "Rooster Coffee Shop" into Google. If somebody looking for Rooster & Moon winds up  Roostercat or vice versa, those business owners had better hope the other one makes a good cup of Joe.  Also, how is coffee from Thornton, CO not local?  Last I checked it's fair trade and organic as well.

The only dog I have in this race is that I love coffee, and the more cafes that are local and independent the better.  We Denverites are bright enough to tell the difference between two cafes that are a half-mile apart and serve different coffee.  I will say that the Roostermoon owner says some nice things, but seems to suffer from passiveagressiveitus a bit: "Happy for them!  But they may serve crappy coffee!"  Let's see what they have to offer before planting those seeds publicly.  Also, agree with Temenos23, Coda is really good.

I usually don't get into arguments, but I have to laugh at everyone that criticizes this coffee shop, especially the name in general, when in reality, its the out of the ordinary names, the business slogans that make no sense, those are the firms that hit it big. Judge this place all you want, they may never have the business depth that Starbucks portrays to the world, but Ill tell you one thing, they serve one hell of a good cup of coffee, and the overall ambience of the place is bar none classy. So get off the judgement boat, and figure out what drink at this place will be your knew house favorite.

I am excited for the Roostercat to open. Coda coffee is the best coffee in town and it will be nice to finally be able to get it at a Denver coffee house!

@joey murdah maybe they were going with a double entendre... you know cockpussy! where as I am not so sure I follow rooster & moon... Rooster and Sun i get, they have a documented relationship.

Rooster & Moon refers to the fact that they are a bar, too.  Day & Night.
