The Digs: Goosetown Tavern, on East Colfax, is a down home watering hole that draws neighborhood crowds of pool sharks and Bluebird Theater pre-concert boozehounds. And it looks just fine inside: The bar is airy and open, complemented by hanging plants and sky lights, and it's got the welcoming vibe of a local hangout rather than a see-and-be-seen cosmopolitan-chic lounge. The pool room is perfect for sipping pints in between a few games, but we prefer the large wooden booths lining Adams Street when we converge with friends.
The Verdict: You know what's awesome? Being able to go to happy hour on a Sunday. Daily happy hours at reputable Denver bars are few and far between, and we always appreciate a cheap seven-day drink week. Goosetown Tavern is one of these joints, which is a huge plus in its favor.
And if you're looking for a friendly bar with decent drink specials and a serious lack of pretension, then Goosetown is your place. The bar will welcome you warmly and the bartenders will cater to your needs for as long as you can keep chugging. But if you're going to Goosetown for the happy hour grub, you best stick to the regular menu. We found ourselves really disappointed in the food options, and it took longer than it should have for our plates to arrive, even though business was slow on our visit. The pork wings, braised shanks drenched in honey-sriracha sauce, sounded delicious on paper, but they were an absolute letdown on the palate. The meat lacked flavor and quality, and we found ourselves not wanting to finish them. The baked Brie was boring and had started to separate, and our hummus plate arrived with warm pita bread and an ice-cream scoop of hummus that was viscous, pasty and overseasoned. In a nutshell, we left with a buzz, but hungry and underwhelmed.
