Pow! Boom! Yum! Slyderman, a comic-book food truck, battles hunger on the mall

A new superhero has arrived in Denver. Seen by multitudes, sampled by many, Slyderman has been using a colorful perch at 16th and Stout as a base for punching out hunger with super mini-sliders. The cart, which debuted last week, is owned by Brian and Kimberly Alcorn; Kimberly came up with the name "Slyderman" because she thought it would capture the public's imagination.

Since the Downtown Denver Partnership, which manages the vending program on the 16th Street Mall, has been focusing on higher-quality offerings as well as expanded hours, the Alcorns put a lot of work into the cart's appearance as well as its food. "Everybody out here already knows about us because the cart itself jumps out at you," says cook Dustin Ward. "It really draws your eye." Once the cart's appearance catches your attention, the menu keeps it. Slyderman's main dish, a cheeseburger "slyder," is made with ground chuck. "It's just a step below sirloin, so it's really good," promises Ward.

And there are plenty of other choices. Slyderman also sells pulled pork with housemade chile rojo, real crab cakes and housemade meatballs. The cart makes its own jerk chicken with pineapple jicama slaw that's "unbelievable," Ward says, as well as an involved Waldorf chicken salad with grilled chicken, Dijon mayo, apples, grapes, celery and onions. And for vegetarians in distress, help is at hand in the form of an eggplant Parmesan "slyder" with mozzarella.

"This is our first edition, and we plan on doing at least five more around town," says Ward. "Everybody who comes down here has done nothing but rave."

Come down between 3 and 5 p.m., and you can get the $5 happy-hour deal: three cheeseburger "slyders," chips and a drink. Otherwise, Slyderman is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. Now, that's truly heroic!
