Rick's Tavern is up for sale

Some sales are done in secret, with the employees only learning the day the deal is done -- if then. In more drastic cases, employees show up to find the door of the establishment where they thought they worked locked, with a "Closed" sign on the door.

And then there's the way that Rick Garcia is selling Rick's Tavern, one of the town's prime spots for for tejano and New Mexican music:

On Saturday night, he stood on the stage of the bar and made an announcement (which he just sent out via e-mail):

I have been the owner of Rick's Tavern for over 20 years. Since it was Garcia's Ice House, it's been part of my life. I own the business. The building belongs to my landlord, who has been a very good landlord.

It saddens me to tell you that Rick's Tavern is up for sale, starting tonight. We are accepting reasonable offers from serious people. No lookie-loos, please.

I'm selling due to health problems. I have some nerve damage; probably from a back injury I sustained some years ago.

We will stay open until we sell Rick's Tavern. My band and I will continue to play, so keep an eye out for us or check our website or mailing list.

On behalf of Cecilia and I, we would like to say we have always valued each and every one of you as customers. But more importantly, we value each and every one of you as our friends.

God bless and thank you.

Garcia promises that the Rick Garcia Band will perform every Saturday and Sunday until the bar's been sold -- when it will close with a big party for the regulars. In the meantime, he's looking for a buyer. Here are the details:
