Ambria...going, going, gone!
Less than a year after Ambria opened on the 16th Street Mall in the former home of Ling & Louie's, the last vestiges of its time there are about to disappear.

It was a wild twelve months for Ambria, which opened last November, kicked its starting chef to the curb early on, then closed ten days ago. But Ambria may not be gone for good. Managing partner Steve Halliday told Lori Midson that he's looking for a smaller space -- one that's fully equipped, because in an internet-only auction today, the contents of "Ambria -- complete restaurant" will be auctioned off.

"I want a smaller restaurant, something around 4,000 square feet that's easier to manage and feels more intimate," Halliday said. He thought he had a line on the perfect space, "and while the deal I lost was what I wanted, I'm talking to a few more brokers about other spaces that fit within the guidelines of what I'm looking for." One of those is downtown, but not on the mall.

As for the inventory he'll auction off, "it's top-of-the line stuff," he noted, "and since I want a smaller restaurant that's hopefully got everything in place, it doesn't make sense to put it all in storage, so we'll have an online auction, and people can come in and kick the tires, so to speak, before they buy."

Want to kick those tires? You can inspect the contents -- "quality kitchen equipment" that includes Ranges, Grill, Griddle, Fryers, Convection Oven, Slicer, Mixer, Cheese Melter, Steamer and More," according to the auction notice -- from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at 1201 16th Street, and then bid online starting at 5 p.m. at www.rollerauction.com.
