City denies Rockbar's liquor-license application renewal

Tom Downey, director of the Denver Department of Excise and Licenses, just issued his final decision regarding Rockbar's application to renew its liquor licenses for the hipster hangout on East Colfax. Downey's decision?

No.

And if that order stands, Rockbar will be high and dry within the month.

In issuing his final order, Downey extended Rockbar's hotel and restaurant liquor license to November 7, because of "sympathy for the employees of the Rockbar who will be impacted by this decision," he writes, and also recognizing "the high likelihood that Licensee will appeal this Decision and Order."

But the dance cabaret license, which allows live entertainment, expires effective immediately. "The health, safety and welfare of the neighborhood are still of tremendous concern and must weigh heavily in finding a temporary balance," says Downey.

Responds Morreale: Oh, and so people can't dance? Because of the 'health, safety and welfare of the neighborhood'? Seriously, are we living in a scene from Footloose?

We'll have more from Morreale and Downey later this week. In the meantime, here's Downey's official decision:

Now that Rockbar has been closed and boarded up, it has been tagged with graffiti.  Love it or hate it, it brought people to the 'hood and looked a hell of a lot better then than it does now.  A vacant, vandalized business space moves the area in the wrong direction.

I'd love to hear from the 4 people who testified against Rockbar as to what their plans are for the area and the Rockbar building itself.  What kind of business would they support?  I mean, really, what would they support?  I'm in that area everyday and I never see the people who testified against Rockbar.  They bitch and complain and do nothing else.  And now those of us who are around have another eyesore to deal with.  Thanks for nothing, guys.

If they seen,t serving under age patrons, then the ruling is ridiculous. Colfax isn't Mayberry. These people live in Denver proper you should expect bars and restaurants to be part of the neighborhood. I call BS.

Is the liquor board of Denver really at liberty to shut down commerce and job creation... i mean i personally know people that rely on Rock Bar as their bread and butter... Pretty Silly.

Places like that are lucky to break even; they make a profit off the bar. I wonder how much longer they'll be around

Wow, a lot of hostility towards Rockbar.  This was a great place to cut loose.  In fact, I think it is the only bar I've danced at in Denver.  The owner is evidently a scum bag which is too bad b/c Colfax is losing a landmark and Denver is losing one of the only places to dance outside of LoDo douche magnets.  March on gentrification.

YAY!!! Great point Jim, you're so smart. Private sector is 100% great and government is 100% bad!!!

-I loved being put on hold for an hour+ by Comcast when I called to report my internet being down the other day. I love how efficiently I can work on our company's web based software during our Comcast internet's weekly outage!!!

-I loved having to reschedule my sales meeting with a perspective client because United Airlines cut costs on plane maintenance and had a mechanical issue and cancelled my flight that I had already boarded 3 hours after the scheduled departure time to visit said client last week!!!

-I love when I pay thousands per year to Aetna Health Insurance and then they find loopholes to not cover me. Then, I love spending an hour on hold each time I call Aetna to ask them why I wasn't covered!!!

-I love how the US spends more than any country in the world @ 18% of GDP per capita on health care, while the 2nd highest spender spends 12% of GDP per capita on health care because they have a single payer system.

Libs and dems are so stupid. Why won't libs get out of the way so we can privatize everything and make everything more efficient? Being a lib, it's a disease!!!

Sounds like the City of Denver is sending Mr. Morrale a message after the El Diablo dust-up to take his business elsewhere.

and people wonder why nobody wants to open a business.  Our government (at all levels) is simply and completely out of control.  Sigh.  (never been to rockbar, don't even drink)

Any bar that is carpeted blows. I was lucky to get out of that bar with my shoes not permanently stuck to the floor.

This place sucks and is run by crooks. Glad they are getting what they deserve.

As the owner of the bar said how does dancing cause any safety problems with the neighborhood? Tom Downey sounds like a typical asshole bureaucrat

I'm old school, I grew up in that neighborhood, and I think most of those joints on that strip ruined the Congress Park feel it had. Take that shit to Lodo. They should have just torn that hotel down anyway. LOL.

Nonsense. It is the best late-night stop for dancing on that side of town (and in my hood). I'm disappointed to see it go...but if it must, then I hope that seedy Motel above it goes bye-bye, too.

They had the worst booze selection ever. Plus, last time I was there they were NOT playing rock. It was a fucking hip hop DJ. No loss to the scene at all

But it is still cool for junkies and hookers to stay at the hotel right? This is just another great example of government overreaching its boundaries.  Not to make this (too) political but this is why we need a smaller more limited government.

@JimRomeYou tell em' man.  While we're at it let's get rid of those pesky big government agencies like police and fire departments, public schools, CDC, and...um....I don't remember (dept of energy - oops).  Yeah! No more free lunch bitches!

JimRome
JimRome

@DanWinter You are right I would privatise public schools (and eliminate PERA while I was at it), the prison system, and most likely the police and fire departments cuz well um the Private Sector can run thing for profit more efficiently than the government.  I know its hard to believe that once we get rid of unions, eliminate non essential employees and get rid of people who just clog the system because of tenure we could run thing better than the government ever could, it is true.  But just keep fooling yourself that the government needs to be involved in every aspect of your life.
