A passerby saw the smoke coming from Tequila's Mexican Restaurant at 17535 South Golden Road early Sunday morning, and called 911 at 1:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

By the time firefighters from four metro departments arrived, the blaze had gone to the roof, and it took several hours to put out the fire.

According to Golden Fire Department spokeswoman Karlyn Tilley, "Crews had to cut through the building with chainsaws to try to access the areas on fire."

The building was destroyed, and the cause of the fire is being investigated, and the probe will take a few days, she says.

This is really sad, a huge loss.  Tequila's had a great staff, great food, great atmosphere, truly a gem of south Golden and the west metro area.  As a long-time customer, this hurts a lot.  I dearly hope that Tequila's can rebuild from these ashes.  I also hope that the staff (some of whom have worked there for years) are able to make ends meet in the meantime.  Any word on what's next?
