Denver and Boulder's best chefs are teaming up to support Hurricane Sandy victims at Mateo's Battle of the Pans benefit
Adley, the former exec chef of the Pinyon in Boulder, along with a bold-name cartel of several other Denver and Boulder chefs -- Jennifer Jasinski (Euclid Hall, Rioja and Bistro Vendome); Max MacKissock (Squeaky Bean); Jenna Johansen; Hunter Pritchett (Luca d'Italia); Steve Redzikowski (Oak at Fourteenth); Kelly Whitaker (Pizzeria Basta); and Kyle Mendenhall (The Kitchen) -- will join Boulder toque Matthew Jansen in his home kitchen of Mateo on Sunday, November 11 for the Battle of the Pans, a benefit for Direct Relief USA, a not-for-profit organization that provides community clinics and health centers with medicines and medical supplies for low-income and uninsured patients -- in this case, specifically those who have been afflicted by the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.
The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m. and costs $125 per person, was a collaborative effort, says Adley, who lived in Hoboken, New Jersey before moving to Boulder. "My old apartment was completely under water, and that really resonated with me -- it became incredibly relevant, and when I started called chefs, there was this tremendous outpouring of support, and every chef is donating their own product, not to mention their time on a night that they usually have off."
Each of the chefs will prepare one course, and after the final course has been served, guests will have the opportunity to bid on their favorites. "At the end of dinner, we're going to have an auction, where diners will bid on their favorite courses, and the corresponding chefs of the winning course will give away a gift certificate for two to their respective restaurant," says Adley, who encourages people to bring their checkbooks."There are still plenty of people who are cold, hungry, displaced and without medical care, and with this benefit, we all want to expand our hospitality beyond our front doors and into the communities and beyond, and we really hope that our guests will help out as much as they can."
Each course will be paired with cocktails from Sean Kenyon, barman at Williams & Graham and Squeaky Bean, along with wines from Infinite Monkey Theorem. "I really think this is going to be an historic night," says Adley. "We've got the best chefs, bartender and winery all coming together for one amazing event, and every single one of us is determined to do what we can to help out our friends and colleagues back East."
