The original Heidi's Brooklyn Deli will close this month in Highland

The original location of Heidi's Brooklyn Deli, at 3130 Lowell Boulevard, will close on Monday, November 26, due to an unresolvable dispute with the landlord. Owners Heidi and Steve Naples are currently looking for a new space in the area, but plans are still tentative.

The Naples opened Heidi's in the summer of 1997, after moving to Denver from Brooklyn with their initial venture, Heidi's Bagels and Ice Cream. The deli has since grown into a chain of franchised soup-and-sandwich joints with outlets from California to Maine.

There are rumors that the space will become an eyeglasses store, which would be a shame, because it's located in one of Denver's most pleasant strips of eateries and shops.

We live in the Highlands and we were sad to see Heidi's go. That being said, we always said that space would be the absolute perfect location for a gourmet grocery store. Our neighborhood truly needs a spot where we can easily pick up fresh fruits, veggies, yogurt, milk, and other essentials that you can't necessarily find at other Highlands specialty shops. Let's just hope that whatever opens in that space adds to the charm of our adorable neighborhood.

If Common Grounds closes out over a rent dispute, kiss Highlands goodbye. Then it'll morph into another indistinguishable strip of chain eateries and boutiques.

Heidi's was the worst run deli I've ever been to. The owners were clueless. The business succeeded because of a great location, not the quality of the product they put out. Their bagels were an insult to humanity. You could legally be shot in Brooklyn for serving a bagel that bad.

The space is way too big for an eyeglass store. I would love to see another deli go into the spot. One with an owner that cares about his business. A place that serves quality breakfast sandwiches would also be a welcome change.

I live in the Highlands and I was waiting for that joint to close. Not really a "DELI" in my opinion. Not very good quality deli meat. It would be nice if another "real" deli opened up there....but whatevs

Sad that Heidi's is leaving; maybe they can downsize and move into Venue's spot. Even sadder about the eyeglass place. A Sunglass Hut is NOT what Highland Square needs -- we aren't the 16th St Mall. If that trend starts, we'll soon have fast food and Verizon stores up and down 32nd. Ugh!

@herepiggypiggy Seriously?  Boars Head wasn't good enough for you??? And they sliced the meat daily, right there behind the counter. Well, they used to when they first opened....

@Michael564 What if it's an independently owned prescription eye-wear store? People need glasses as much as they need bagels.

@joey murdah  @Michael564 Chipotle, I could take because it was original Denver. Anthony's I didn't mind either because it's the closest to NY-style pizza than anywhere else nearby. Garbanzos started to push the limits, but Jimmy Johns definitely went over the top. I thought a better location for them was Sheridan, near Jersey Mikes.

@Mantonat Heidi's was having a landlord dispute, right? I don't expect an independent eyewear store to be able to pay that high rent. Unless they are selling $400 glasses, in which case, they will be out of business soon. This hood may be growing to be the next Cherry Creek, but we ain't there yet. :-)
