Following on the footsteps of its Kent Place location, which opened in November of 2012, Patxi's Pizza, a San Francisco-based pizzeria, whose claim to fame is its signature deep-dish, Chicago-style pies, will open its second Denver outpost at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 25, in Cherry Creek, at 185 Steele Street.

"With our first Denver location in Cherry Hills a great success and seven locations in San Francisco, we're thrilled to be expanding in the Denver market and bringing our fresh, authentic Chicago-style and Italian pizzas to Cherry Creek," says William Freeman, who owns Patxi's with business partner and chef Patxi Azpiroz.

The space -- formerly Waterworks -- is similar to the Kent Place original, although the Cherry Creek outpost is slightly more intimate and definitely more eclectic in style, with theatrical kettle chrome lights suspended over the bar, reclaimed wooden tables and accents, retro mirrors lining the south side of the dining room, a soapstone bar facing antiqued glass, a funky "disco" wall in the foyer, and exposed brick rounding out the interior.

Like its sibling, the Cherry Creek location offers a pick-up window that peeks into a bustling kitchen, where a crew turns out deep-dish pizzas, thin-crusted pizzas and, starting on Monday, pan pizzas. "We do the pan pizza in San Francisco, and it's a huge hit, so we wanted to serve it in our Denver stores, too," says Azpiroz, explaining that the primary difference between the deep-dish pie and and the pan pizza is that the latter is crusted with cornmeal and absent of a second layer of dough. "It's lighter, too," he adds.

Come spring, the eighty-seat space, which includes a ten-stool bar (and a larger tap-beer lineup than the Cherry Hills spot), will also unveil a large patio, complete with an awning and heat lamps for year-round dining. Happy hour will also be introduced in the coming weeks, and Azpiroz is aiming to have two -- an afternoon happy hour and a late-night happy hour with discounted drinks and appetizers.

Regular hours, starting Monday, will be from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, although Azpiroz hints that he may stay open late night -- until midnight -- on Friday and Saturday nights. That's as good a reason as any for sleepy Cherry Creekers to stay awake past prime time, especially if he adds a late-night happy hour.

Here's a first look at the digs.
