Reader: Old Major and Highland Tavern both lose the d-bag contest

A rare quiet moment at Old Major.
During this weekend's good weather, people were packing every patio in LoHi, hanging out of every window in the neighborhood hangouts. But even last week, as the snow was falling, people crowded into Lower Highland to watch the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode featuring Highland Tavern, to fight for a seat at Old Major, to drink a Pink Pony at Highland Tap and Burger.

All the action in this hot restaurant neighborhood inspired a heated discussion...

After a few rounds debating the douchebags frequenting assorted spots, AceRanchero weighed in with this:

I really don't see the point of debating Old Major against Highland Tavern given their apparent differences in style, menu, concept, etc. I would no more go to OM for tater tots and a PBR than I would got to HT for a designer cocktail with lamb orecchiette. (And I've done both.)

A d'bag is a d'bag, whether waxing a twirly mustache, farming a beard, or swaddled in fleece with a Carhartt diaper. However, if you really want put together a determined demographic of d'bags, sit in the window at LoHi SteakBar and watch who goes in and out of Williams & Graham.

What's your favorite spot in LoHi? And which place is likely to attract the most d-bag clientele?

Can I pretend like I'm Ace Ranchero so Sean Kenyon can buy me drinks and food? Also, I'll be ordering an Old Fashioned. Because, ya know, I'm a dickhead

Wow, it's a real shame that garbage like this gets published. Great restaurants with great food, booze, etc. What's the need to call people "douchebags"? That really sucks.

I love living here and enjoying my own life. I guess some people really need things like who goes to what restaurants to be dramatic. It's like high school all over again. Jesus, grow up. If you like a place, go. If you don't, don't. Good thing the internet exists so you can be a dick to a bunch of hardworking people for no reason at all.

Apples and oranges.... Why don't we compare Williams and Graham to the despicable Green Russell. And, while we're at it, The Highland Tavern may have the most approachable, fun and non d'bag clientele in the ENTIRE Highlands area.

W&G is great. I've only had drinks and an app at Old Major, but that was spectacular. Haters gonna hate.

I don't see why everyone has to trash all of the nice places in LoHi as d-bag hangouts. After all, The Tavern group is going to open a LoHi location. That will be the undisputed d-bag central soon.

I get a kick out of a imagining a douchebag making an effort to get a window seat at LoHi so he can look at other people going into a different building to call them douchebags, all the while apparently oblivious to his own raging douchebaggery.

I already respected Sean since I have always been treated very well when I have visited Williams & Graham but now I respect him even more (and I do not know Sean personally). This is a classy reply and sincere offer that is refreshing in this day and age. I was just at W&G on Friday for a birthday drink and once again the staff and drinks were top notch. Anytime I have been there the patrons all seem like normal people, not pretentious or D-baggy. Even with the unique style/set up of the establishment, which I actually love, it has a cordial atmosphere created by both the guests and the staff. Thanks, Sean, for defending your guests and W&G. Well done.

AceRanchero,

I am the proprietor of Williams and Graham. The view from your ivory tower must be glorious. It is amazing that you can judge someone based on their appearance and decide that they are a D-bag. Which factor defines a D-bag? Clothes? Hairstyle? Skin tone? What car they drive? This is all you can see as you sit in the window at LoHi. Generally, I don't respond to these things but I was compelled by the insults that you hurled at our guests. I interact with over a thousand guests a week at our establishment and you are absolutely wrong. Our guests come from all walks of life. Restaurant industry, professionals, artists, neighbors... everyday people. I will vehemently defend them against your shallow and unwarranted attacks. As well, our friends at Old Major and Highland Tavern (and their guests) deserve better than your petty barbs. As easy as it is for you to hide behind a screen name and the anonymity of a web post, I'm going to call you out of hiding. I invite you at any time to come to Williams & Graham. Come meet me, our staff and especially our guests. I will buy you dinner and drinks, and also serve you up a nice serving of crow after you realize that your judgments were incorrect. I offer this in all sincerity and in the interest of harmony.  I will join you for a drink. As well, we will walk over to Old Major and Highland Tavern to enjoy their own brand of hospitality.

Sincerely,

Sean Kenyon

I heard some hipster ravings about the $60 Ribeye at Old Major , one claimed he had to sell his single speed just to pay for it.

I wanted to try it out but they wouldn't even let me in the door due to the fact that I have neither tattoos or a neck beard.

Pretty positive AceRanchero is your douchebag. You'll be able to find him at Jackson's and Chloe on the weekends.

@seankenyon13 Save it Sean.  He's already visited and apparently people didn't chat him up enough, laugh hard enough at his jokes, or appreciate his incisive evaluation of dining nuance.  Picture Cliff from Cheers with a thesaurus and a chip on his shoulder.

@seankenyon13 Agreed.  Though I do understand the type of person the author is talking about when they use the term "d-bag," and have had my annoyances with that crowd, the whole concept of this post smacks of the same type of sad desperation you get when you see an anti-gay rights senator getting caught with his pool boy.

The middle-school exclusionary attitude is just ridiculous and to label an entire bar's clientele as any one type of person is ignorant, at best, and hateful at its worst.  People go to a bar to drink and have a good time, not get judged by an immature mindset that has it in for them before they even walk in the door.

Patricia is supposed to be a part of the Society of "Professional" Journalists.  Guess that doesn't mean much when doing an insulting blog post.

@Philo99 Hey! You're the same guy who keeps bashing Old Major! But you said in those posts that you got in and felt the need to send three appetizers back but you didn't. So it looks like you grew a beard and got some ink done, huh? Why you trashing Old Major so bad dudes? Did you not get hired there?

I've eatten at Old Major and let me assure you I don't have a single tattoo, a beard, or moustache. Maybe they wouldn't let you in the door cause you are an ass.

Keeps bashing? I made one satirical comment of the crowd and one honest assessment of my dining experience there.

That's hardly bashing, so just lighten up Francis.
