Still snowing? Shovel up an Irish coffee at McCormick's

When I was at McCormick's Fish House & Bar during last week's Monday blizzard, I spotted a tray loaded with mugs of Irish coffee. Decades ago, McCormick & Schmick's had started offering Irish coffee for a buck at their LoDo outpost whenever it snowed, and after Landry's bought the chain, the new owners continued the tradition. And even though regulars ordered round after round last week, it seemed like the deal would dry up soon. After all, it was April 15: How much more could it snow?

Six inches and counting, apparently. It looks like McCormick's could be pouring plenty of Irish coffee again today. That's not the only tradition the newly remodeled restaurant has continued, either.

Dollar Irish coffee at McCormick's -- no charge for whipped cream.
McCormick's still has a major happy hour, and though the deals aren't quite the bargain they were twenty years ago, when $1.95 bought you a cheeseburger or any number of other items and denizens of LoDo used the bar's "cheap time" as their kitchen, the food is still good and fast. Today that burger (with fries) costs $3.95 (so do three beef sliders), but there are also snacks that run from $2.95 (bruschetta or sweet potato fries, for example) to $5.95 (Baja fish tacos, for starters, as well as blackened chicken quesadilla or firecracker shrimp).

But you don't get the happy-hour dishes without dropping at least $3.25 on a beverage -- which isn't tough when cocktail deals range from $4 well spirits and $6 glasses of wine to $7 martinis.

And while the happy hour got crunched a few years back, more expansive afternoon hours have returned: 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There's a late-night happy hour, too, from 9 p.m. to close Sunday through Thursday, and 10 p.m. to close Friday and Saturday. Fair warning, though: With so many bars in a neighborhood that used to have very few, McCormick's rarely stays open until midnight.

With any luck, the snow will stop by then.
