Budapest Bistro closes on South Pearl to make way for a Mexican restaurant

After more than two decades at 1585 South Pearl Street, the Budapest Bistro has closed its doors. The restaurant owned by Anna Hellvig, who was also the chef, had updated its look several years ago -- but with all the other changes on South Pearl Street, the time looked right to now close altogether. The space will be turned into a Mexican restaurant -- possibly by the end of June -- by the owners of Gaia Bistro, which Patrick Mangold-White and Jon Edwards opened on the same block in 2006, and Kaos Pizzeria , which is just up the street.

And that's not the only homegrown restaurant chain on South Pearl Street.

Izakaya Den just closed on Sunday night, in anticipation of moving into its new home next to Sushi Den; that move could come as early as next week.

I'm sorry to hear about Budapest Bistro's demise.  I was a long time loyal customer back in the days when Anna (and her then husband Rudy) had an outpost on South Broadway (Czardas)   - truly great times with strolling gypsy violins and flaming desserts.  Sadly, they lost their lease and moved to South Pearl and Rudy decamped about the same time.  Since then the restaurant has felt terribly tired and really overpriced for what it was.  Makes me sad to lose an East European centric restaurant because there are so few here that do it well but the last time we were there the $100+ for dinner just didn't seem worth it.
