The tofu dishes at Szechuan Chinese are as good as the pork dumplings

Szechuan Chinese -- nestled in the corner of a strip mall off Garrison and Sixth Avenue -- is a destination spot for this town's dumpling lovers, and earned Best of Denver awards in '06 and '07. But the vegetarian menu here is reason to celebrate, too; several tofu dishes are superb.

The sesame tofu, pictured above, is served on a bed of crispy rice noodles that catch the juices. The silken tofu is fried crispy on the outside and is beautifully soft and creamy on the inside; it's glazed with a sweet-tangy sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds.

Fans of General Tso's sauce will find it hard to resist the tofu option here. It's served with roasted peppers rather than broccoli, and the tofu is fried, then slathered in the appropriate sauce.

The tofu even works well the next day -- which is good, because you're likely to over-order. The combo special contains more than enough for a meal, and for $11.99, you also get veggie egg rolls and a cup of soup.

The egg drop soup is excellent, and Szechuan Chinese even puts tofu in the mix.

While the eggrolls are standard veggie egg rolls -- mostly cabbage on the inside -- they're still tasty.
