Voodoo Doughnuts is coming to East Colfax -- where else?

The rumor that Denver would soon be getting an outpost of the Portland, Oregon-based Voodoo Doughnuts has been swirling for eighteen months. The colorful shop, owned by Tres Shannon and Kenneth "Cat Daddy" Pogson, pairs weirdly flavored, irreverently named doughnuts -- like the Gay Bar ("chocked full of luscious cream and all the colors of the rainbow!") and the Maple Blazer Blunt ("It's a raised doughnut rolled into a blunt with maple frosting and red sprinkle ember, prices vary due to Blazer Mania!") -- with eclectic decor themed around voodoo priests. It's been featured on Anthony Bourdain's show and named an international tourist destination by the Los Angeles Times and, as Laura Shunk reported in late 2011, you can also get married on-site.

"We'll do something here in the next year," Shannon told Shunk at the time. "Denver's definitely on the radar."

Missed it by several months, but the chain is definitely coming, according to a story in today's Portland Oregonian. Voodoo will open its first store outside of Oregon -- and its fourth altogether -- in the heart of Denver.

"It's on East Colfax, this great gritty avenue, which used to be really, really scary and sleazy," Shannon told the paper. "There's a dentist nearby and a wonderful ... lesbian bar with a pink pool table, the same color as our boxes. That's a good sign. And there's a tattoo parlor and then a medical marijuana dispensary. It's kind of like one-stop shopping."

A Voodoo employee who's originally from Denver will run the shop.

Please don't go to East Colfax. Be more centrally located.

I was in Portland last week when my 83 year old uncle (whom we presented with his first VooDoo apple fritter only the day before) showed me the article in the Oregonian. It was pretty exciting, especially since I am confident it will fit very well on Colfax. The parking won't be great, but it's better then nothing.

Definitely not geared for tourists, just for the people of Portland, Eugene, and now Denver! Finally. I went to VooDoo when I lived there and always go to the downtown location when I go back. Maple Bacon is my favorite too! But if you're really hungry go for the Tex-Ass Challenge or the Rapper's delight,  which is a trio of awesomness. (Old Dirty Bastard, Marshall Mathers & a Maple Blazer Blunt !) The standards like an Old Fashioned or Cake doughnuts are great too, so they have something for everyone - and I never thought they were overpriced. You get what you pay for.

I wonder how many of the "donuts for dickheads" and "overpriced" commenters have actually tried Voodoo Donuts.  My experience is that most people who try them are pretty satisfied and, inevitably, crave them later.  I'm pretty excited to have this addition to the dining scene (are donuts considered "dining"?).

Sounds like a Top Ten Donuts Only Dickheads Would Order.

Nitpicky note but I think it's worth mentioning: It's not The Portland Oregonian, it's just the Oregonian.

Ask em to bring back the NyQuil donut - they had to pull it in Portland, but I'm hoping Denver is more open minded

Somewhere in the 1500 block of Colfax next to Blush and Blu, I am thinking either where Rent a Center was or World Famous Pizza was. This is going to be awesome
