Reader: South Broadway needs more (good) Mexican restaurants

Categories: Cafe Society

Pizza joints are popping up along Broadway, which lost a couple of Mexican mainstays last month. Although Adelita's Cocina y Cantina opened a few weeks ago at 1294 South Broadway, that's still a mile south of where Juanita's and El Diablo closed their doors. Will the opening of a sixth Illegal Pete's later this month at 270 South Broadway help fill the gap?

One reader hopes so.

Says dave_in_baker:

Until recently I would have said South Broadway needs another Mexican place just about as badly as we need more pizza. But with the closing of Diablo and Juanita's, and Senior Burrito having gone seriously downhill over the past year (new management, maybe?), this might be a welcome addition.

Does Broadway need more Mexican restaurants? What's your go-to Mexican restaurant in this part of Denver? And have you tried Adelita's?

What's the problem here?  Go to Socorro's (on Bayaud, half block off Broadway) and be done with it.  Excellent.

Well, I am in disagreement with Dave_in_Baker regarding Senor Burritos.  I eat there for more often than I should and have for many years.  Still family owned and operated and I think the food, if anything, is better than ever.  The only downside is no booze so no margaritas - bummer.

Had lunch recently at Adelita's and the food and service were terrific.  Family owners from Michoacan serving really authentic Mexican food - no Colo/Mex or Tex/Mex.  This is the real deal.  Try the carne asada - excellent!  Parking sucks though.

Illegal Pete's is a Mexican restaurant?

Does this mean the Taco Bell at Alameda counts as Mexican?

Maybe you can set up a trade with the Highlands.

You'd be amazed at the number of morons who think Illegal Pete's, Taco Bell, Del Taco, etc. are Mexican joints.

@davebarnes I'd count Taco Bell before I'd count The Blue Vomit (oh, I mean Bonnet).
