Tivoli Beer, based on the historic Denver brand, will hit bottles this week

Tivoli Brewing, a new company that brought back one of the oldest names in Denver beer last year, will begin selling 22-ounce bomber bottles of Tivoli Beer this week.

The beer, a German-style lager, is based on the name and recipe for the original Tivoli Beer, which was brewed in Denver in the building of the same name from 1900 until 1969, when the brewery closed after an ownership change and a flood.

In 2012, longtime MillerCoors employee Corey Marshall bought the abandoned trademark to the name and began brewing an updated version of one of the original recipes at Prost Brewing, which also specializes in making German-style lagers.

Prost will continue to brew beer for Tivoli's draft accounts, but the beer for the bottles is now being brewed at Hall Brewing near Parker. Hall went into business late last year, and has its own bottling line; Tivoli, which has its own distributorship, sells Hall beer as well.

"We've transported our recipe and brewing knowledge over there for bottles," says Marshall, who plans to get his first bottles into liquor stores this week.

"Hall has excess capacity, and it makes sense for us to work with other breweries instead of trying to to build our own brewery and bottling line," he adds. "That way, we can buy beer and labels and malt together and help reduce costs for all of us."

Tivoli currently brews about 140 barrels of beer per month at Prost, and plans to brew 300 cases per month at Hall. That beer will go to liquor stores in Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and the Vail Valley for starters.

"We want people to know that the historic Tivoli beer is back in business," Marshall says. Eventually, he'd like to package the beer in twelve-ounce bottles as well.

Tivoli also makes Sigi's Wild Horse Buck Beer, which is also based on an historic recipe, but there are no plans to bottle that beer for a while.
