Reader: Smashburger, Larkburger and the Cherry Cricket are all overrated

shmashburgerplatter.jpg
Smashburger is pleased to meat you.
While the homegrown Smashburger chain continues to rack up smashing stats, adding locations across the country as well as two more in the metro area (there are now 21 Smashburgers in Colorado), another attempt at creating a burger chain has gone flatter than a smashed patty. Both H Burger locations have closed, leaving just the Little H Burger fast-casual spot on Colorado Boulevard.

Judging from the comments, readers weren't big fans of H Burger -- but some commenters think other beloved local burger joints are overrated, too. Says Cody:

Don't know why Smashburger, Larkburger, or Cherry Cricket are even in consideration... Smashburger plain sucks on a regular basis. Larkburger, while delicious, is the overpriced small-portioned hipster gourmet mac store version of a burger joint. And it baffles me how Cherry Cricket gets on TV shows when it's little more than your average bar food, with WAY more hype and cost.
What do you think of Smashburger, Larkburger and the Cherry Cricket? What's your favorite burger in the Denver area?

How sad and pathetic that you choose to RIP on the locally owned, family owned businesses.  By the way....these businesses pay a living wage and offer benefits.. Overrated??? well maybe so..go eat the crap they sell at the fast food joints...You do not deserve a good burger LOSER!!!!

When I moved back home to Denver in '08 (after a decade long sojourn in LaLa) an old friend took me to the Glendale Smashburger.  I didn't really taste what the big deal was.  In fact, I had my second Smashburger in 2011 when I began working downtown.  I'm not in any big hurry for a third Smashburger.

Park Burger on South Pearl is one of my faves. And The Elm is awesome, especially their El Vez topped with peanut butter, jalapeños and bacon.

All these places suck, since NONE of them use grass-fed beef.

For some unknown reason, even though we can get AMAZING grass-fed beef here in CO, none of the local burger joints use it, but instead foist on us corn-fed, CAFO beef.  Why can't we have places like Farm Burger or Yeah! Burger like they have in Atlanta, or many of the other small chains that serve decent beef?

Larkburger, Cherry Cricket, Highland Tap, and Mountain Sun are all great if you're a dipshit who wants to pay $10+ for a burger with fries consumed while being surrounded by douche bags. If you want a real stripped down burger made from quality meat that isn't smothered in goat cheese, caramelized onions, or some other foodie shit, go to Jim's Burger Haven or Griff's. It's what a burger should be. A nice beef taste and some ketchup and mustard. The foodie-ification of America has turned traditional-fare into a shit-show of 'our take on...' which is shorthand for we decided to ruin a classic by littering your plate with overpriced ingredients that dummies willing pay exorbitant prices for because they read some ridiculous food blogger write 150 words about truffle oil. At the end of the day it's a god damn burger. if it doesn't taste like beef, maybe some pickles, cheese, and condiments on a bun, then you're being taken for a ride.

Damn straight I said that. I would easily take an ordinary chain like Good Times or somewhere like Red Robin over those mentioned. Tried and true disappointment at all three, on numerous occasions. I'm excited to try 5 Guys, i've heard great things, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's only average. Anyone had the burgers at one of the Copper Pots? Or The Castle on Broadway in Littleton (bogo er'ry tuesday)? Hell even Griff's does it right, or Freddy's, or Steak-n-Shake (last two are pretty much the same if you haven't been to both). Oh and when are we getting our In-n-Out Burger?

Not to use this as a platform but we serve a pretty solid burger at Biker Jim's. After eating hot dogs every day for the last 7 years having a few burgers on the menu is kinda nice!

cherry cricket is popular because of so many ingredients. smashburger is good... that might be a location thing. ive never had larkburger but when someones hatred of something is so thin that they need to refer to a food place as "hipster" than its worth checking out, at least.

I haven't had the larkburger or the cherry cricket but I can agree smash burger isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Smashburger I agree. Larkburger WHAT? They are totally crazy! The Cherry Cricket... they have obviously never been there on St Paddy's Day!

Cherry Cricket is good but the parking sucks, the restaurant and staff is hit or miss in the cleanliness and friendliness department, but their food is excellent. Smashburger doesn't even compare to Steak & Shake so why would they even be considered. everyone knows the Crown Burger by Evans & Colorado beats them all anyways

@rebeldor Looks like the new burger setup at Tony's Market on Broadway features grass-fed beef and bison. But for some reason, people still roll their eyes because it's "just another burger joint.'

@adrotar623 I agree with you on the baseless attack of Larkburger being 'hipster'. I'm just as annoyed by hipsters as the next guy, but often times hipsters eat and make pretty tasty food. I'm not even sure how one can call Larkburger 'hipster'. They have them in suburbs like Arvada and Thornton - not exactly hipster-ville.

Lark makes a good burger - I like them better than Smashburger and slightly less than Cherry Cricket. To me Highland Tap might have the best burger right now on a consistent basis, but like everything else in this thread it's just like an opinion...

@morgan.ruben @adrotar623 I think lark is hipster because they serve kale and quinoa. The only thing they're missing is a juice bar for people on juice cleanses.
