Wynkoop "idea man" Marty Jones leaves the brewery to take on other projects
Marty Jones, who has been one of Colorado's foremost craft beer ambassador's for more than a decade and the chief idea man for the Wynkoop Brewing Company since 2009, will leave the brewery this week to pursue a career as an independent consultant.
Wynkoop Facebook page Marty Jones (second from right) performed in a pick-up band called the Gourdians in 2012, along with Stone's Greg Koch and other brewers.
"I had a lovely time at Wynkoop, and they gave me tons of room to be creative and loose, but a good part of my work was management and I want to focus on fun," Jones says. "I want to focus my time on the more creative side of what I do. There are new kinds of thrills when you work with new companies. I'm anxious to do that."
At the Wynkoop, Jones, along with head brewer Andy Brown, helped revamp the 25-year-old brewpub's beer list, updating the recipes and starting a canning program. He also ran the Beerdrinker of the Year contest and helped turn Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout from an April's Fool's Joke into the brewery's ballsiest product.
Made with bull testicles, the beer was conceived in early 2012 as a prank, but the reaction was so favorable that the brewery decided to turn it into a real beer. Since then, it has made international headlines and is available -- in two packs -- all over Denver.
"That was a blast," he says. "I will miss coining more puns that deal with balls and nuts."
But over the years, Jones has also been involved in the creation of other well-known beer slogans, including Great Divide's "Great Minds Drink Alike," New Belgium's "Contents Under Pleasure," and Oskar Blues's "Canned Beer Apocalypse."
For now, Jones has lined up two clients, Denver's Colorado Cider Company, and San Diego's Mission Brewing, whom he'll help with promotions and publicity.
"These are companies that I love what they do and I can have an impact," he says, adding that he plans to add on other clients as well, including a local brewery.
"I'll miss the beers at Wynkoop," Jones says. "But I'm very excited."
