Photos: Black Sky Brewery opens today with beer, pizza and heavy metal

Harry Smith opens Black Sky Brewery today.
Harry Smith, a longtime brewer at Breckenridge Brewery, opened his own place today, just a block from his old employer and with its full support.

Black Sky Brewery, which dishes up Connecticut-style pizza along with more than ten taps of local beers, was a long time in the making, Smith says. "It doesn't even seem real yet," Smith said earlier today; the brewpub opened at 11 a.m.

Mechanical issues prevented Black Sky from having its own beers on tap for the opening, but Smith says at least three of them will be ready in the next ten days to two weeks, including Demon Seed IPA, an American pale ale and an imperial oatmeal pumpkin porter.

In the meantime, Black Sky is serving beers from Breckenridge, Strange, Renegade, Dry Dock, Prost, Hogshead, Wit's End and other local breweries.

The imperial pumpkin porter was brewed in collaboration with Todd Usry, the brewmaster and operations chief at Breckenridge, who was also on hand today for the opening. Also in the house to show support was the owner of Black Sky's next closest brewery-neighbor, Brian O'Connell of Renegade Brewing.

But they weren't first in line. That honor belonged to a couple of Smith's friends, who showed up at 9 a.m. and waited in line.

Black Sky has five employees, including Smith's wife, Lila Mackey, and will be looking to hire more soon. The brewpub will be open six days a week and closed on Mondays.

The brewery boasts a seven-barrel brewing system that includes some old pieces of equipment from Breckenridge, along with a patio, a parking lot and a mural. It also has a heavy-metal theme to its decor and beer names.

Eventually, there will be twenty beers on tap and three sodas.

"We looked everywhere, but this space had everything we needed," Smith says.

@Michael Beckerman What do you know about Metal? Coming from a guy who takes pictures of fashion shows - which is about the least metal thing I can think of - you're opinion doesn't hold much weight here. Long live Metal!

I'm stoked and apparently this Michael guy went deaf 25 years ago...

I'm not a huge metal fan but I'm happy that a bar is playing the music they want vs whatever is "popular".

Well, crap. I just found out that Metal is dead. Now, I'm just confused as to what *type* of music I was listening to @ the Mayhem and Locura festivals???

Michael Beckerman

Absolutely not. Metal died a slow death many years ago. 100% of it's cool factor is now long since gone. If your objective is to make money by associating something with Heavy Metal, you are about 25 years too late, unfortunately.

Real quick question: what's "Connecticut style pizza"? I grew up in CT and have never heard of such a thing. Can't wait to go try it, though!

Sounds like you are still blaming others for your alcoholism. You may have been sober 20 years, but you still take no responsibility for your problems. I'm guessing you were a better person when you were drunk. :P

I don't think it's "derivative" when Harry has been working to put this together since way before TRVE opened; I remember talking to him and Lila about it in 2010 at my bar. IIRC, it was always going to be called Black Sky (I think I have a business card with that name, from 2010) and it was always going to be metal themed...People will have preferences, but I'd just ask everybody to keep an open mind, taste the beers, experience the vibe, and WTF--maybe support both? One thing for sure, nothing False Metal about Harry...

I want to know about the "Connecticut style" pizza. Are we talking New Haven, Sally's-Modern-Pepe's style?  If so, and if they did it right, I'd love this place.  We've got plenty of beer in Denver but no credible New Haven-style pizza that I'm aware of.

Death to False Metal.

I will continue to grab food at Sputnik before parking it at TRVE for the night if I am over that way.  This seems a touch derivative, though I will like Denver a little more if it can support both places.

Good news for Harry -and for us- who's one of the best brewers in town!  I'll be a regular!

BTW, it's about the beer, not about who represents heavy metal - or not.

I hate alcohol. Been sober 20 years. It's remarkable how many people act as parasites and capitalize on alcoholism and think nothing of their responsibility to do something else. Is there a beer shortage? Is there a shortage of drunks? Write a metal song about the stupid parasitic cycle of bar, beer, wasted idiotic life...etc. ad nauseum.

There's no need for a competition for "most metal"... but if there is one, TRVE Brewing is leading the charge.

ARE YOU HIRING? :-D Man o' man,... my husband would love to do this, but Casper is sort of a weird market....lots of Bud drinkers here. Ugh. My husband has been all-grain brewing for nearly 15 years now and has impressed many with his recipes and talent. We both work as environmental consultants for a company (me a geologist, I quit in May to follow music goals), but my dream for my husband would be to do what Harry Smith has done. We each live too short of a life to not follow the true passions we have, and instead sit behind a desk, day after day, potentially hating what you're doing, and receiving no respect (or proof of your worth) from bosses and supervisors, ...all to simply make someone else rich. Rock on, Harry Smith....rock on! ♪♫

@contender A recent study from Harvard concluded that 16% of all metal is false.

@maxplanck0 No doubt. This place has been open for a day and people are already making up their minds. I understand that everyone has their own taste in music, but these are two pretty different kinds of breweries. Black Sky has guest taps and a pizza oven. Trve has great atmosphere and pretty good beers. I think fans of good beer and good music would be happy with more choices.

@Kronus LeSpears And yet you are perfectly willing to become a host to the parasite known as Facebook, which capitalizes on narcissism and superficiality.  Is there a hobby shortage?  At least going to the bar means you're away from the computer.
