Ernie's Pizza, Copper Kettle and Hops & Pie raise a pint to craft beer this week
Size is relative when it comes to most things, and breweries are no exception. Over the past couple of years, Breckenridge Brewery has made some commercials poking fun at the big boys of beer for their sales techniques, and now Yak & Yeti is doing the same to Breckenridge. Although Breckenridge is small compared to Bud, Miller and Coors, it is much bigger than the Yak, which the little Arvada brewpub points out in its own commercial. You can read more about the commercial on the Yak & Yeti blog, and check out the Breckenridge commercials in our previous post on them.

Copper Kettle Brewing is turning out a new cask of beer aged with fresh hops each Wednesday this month for its weekly Firkin Wednesdays program. Freshcraft, Odell Brewing and Leopold Bros will come together tonight at 7 p.m. for a release party/beer dinner celebrating Odell's Fernet Aged Porter at the beer-centric restaurant. The idea for the beer came about last year when Freshcraft picked up a Fernet barrel from Leopold Bros and took it to Odell, where the brewery aged some Cutthroat Porter in it. This year, Odell brewed a special imperial porter and then aged it in several Leopold Bros Fernet barrels; it is being released in bottles and in kegs. But Freshcraft still has a keg of the original brew and will tap one of each tonight alongside some special dishes and some cocktails using Leopold Bros spirits. Tickets are $60 and include food from the buffet, a pour of each beer, a cocktail and another Odell beer.

Lowry Beer Garden wraps up its second annual Oktoberfest this month with live music (oom-pah bands: Austrian Connection, the Rhinelanders and Polkanauts) and a party today and tomorrow from 6:30 to 10 p.m. (Anyone who wears a German dirndl or ledershosen gets their first beer free). There will also be a mini tap takeover by Left Hand Brewing, which will be pouring Oktoberfest, Sawtooth Ale, Milk Stout Nitro, Polestar Pilsner, 400 Pound Monkey and Short Spear.
Ernie's Bar & Pizza will showcase "fresh-hop" beers on a third of its taps starting today through October 4. They will be one of the few places in town to carry such a wide variety of these beers. Ernie's will donate 50 cents from every fresh hop pint purchased to the Colorado Brewers Guild.
The Copper Kettle will be tipping steins today, celebrating Oktoberfest by releasing four different German-style lagers: Oktoberfest, Kolsch, Dunkel and Pilsner. They might even have an oom pah band. Crazy Good Food will be serving German specialties.

River North Brewery is set to debut several new, barrel-aged beers over the next few weeks in bottles and on draft. The first is Rum Barrel Quandary, which is a blend of two-thirds River North quadrupel aged in rum barrels with one-third fresh. "The result melds the maltiness of a Belgian dark ale with the sweet sharpness of rum and oak, striking a refined balance between the beer and the barrel," the brewery says. There will tapping party in the taproom today at 1 p.m., where bottles will be sold. But since 72 cases were bottled, the beer should be available in liquor stores as well.
Hops & Pie, the craft beer-and-pizza-centered restaurant that helped usher in a new wave of beer-themed eateries to Denver, will celebrate its third birthday with a party starting at noon and a fantastic selection of beers from Avery Brewing. Selections on tap include Momi Hiwa, Uncle Jacob's Stout, Lilikoi Kepolo, Bad Apples, Wee Turtles, Trogdor the Burninator, Tweak, DuganA, White Rascal, Cacade Hop-Backed IPA, the Beast, Chai Brown, Samael's, Odio Equum, Black Pearl, Thensaurum and some secret taps. There will be raffles and prizes, and the Colorado Craft Beer Show will broadcast live from the party.
Epic Brewing will hold a grand opening party today for its new taproom in Denver, which is attached to the multimillion-dollar new brewery that the Salt Lake City-based company opened here in July. The tap room will open at noon; it has 25 taps and two beer engines. Guests are greeted in the space with a large cold case containing 22-ounce bottles to go. Epic will also be offering tasters, growler fills and public tours. Bubba Dukes BBQ will be dishing up barbecue and portabella sandwiches today as well (and Tender Belly will be at the tap room tomorrow).

A group of women brewers and brewery workers will tap the third all-female collaboration beer today at 6 p.m. at Wynkoop Brewing. The beer, called Whakalicious, is an extra pale ale featuring Motueka hops. It was brewed a couple of weeks ago at Longmont's Oskar Blues. Previous lady beers were tapped earlier this year. Proceeds from the beer are being donated to the Pink Boots Society.
