Reader: Hypocritical towns ban recreational pot, but pack in brewpubs

Today is October 1, which means that businesses that want to sell recreational marijuana on January 1, 2014, can start applying for their licenses. But not in many municipalities around Colorado, which have put prohibitions on the sale of pot. Meanwhile, Denver's recent craft-beer revolution continues to ripple outward, and the city's southern suburbs are finding themselves at the forefront of the next wave of breweries. The latest city to land its own taproom is Littleton, where the owners of 38 State Brewing have just signed a lease for a spot at 8071A South Broadway. "Littleton doesn't have anything like what we are trying to do," says 38 State co-owner Brett Blazek.

Littleton may not have recreational pot stores, either, which inspires this response from Harry:

Can't help but note the hypocrisy of Littleton. God forbid we have established retail options for cannabis, but let's pack in as many brew pubs as possible so we can put more drunk drivers on the street. Priorities.
What do you think of towns that allow liquor stores and bars but not the sale of recreational marijuana? Can Colorado support both the craft-beer and cannabis industries?

yes . As a frmr resident of White Middleclassville this does not surprise me. Such narrow minds but then when Littleton sees how much tax money Denver is getting from medical pot ( Half a mil so far) even the staunchest " oh no the children, we must not let them see their eyes oh their eyes" foks will re think. I am glad to know so I won't be bothered spending my money at Fearville, CO

I see many of you A ) Been sippin that hatoraide and B ) Believe whatever is posted in front of you. In reality, the vote on whether or not to allow the FOUR already existing dispensaries to take up distribution of recreation use marijuana has not even concluded yet. Do some research on an issue before you speak on it. And stop hatin just to be hatin. Nobody wants to hear that nonsense. http://www.ourcoloradonews.com/littleton/news/final-retail-pot-vote-postponed/article_a78ae048-2496-11e3-8db5-0019bb2963f4.html

I don't smoke but I supported the legalization of marijuana. I DO drink beer and, of course, support my local craft brewery. All I ask is that people stop demonizing alcohol to push the pro-pot agenda. Hell, I agree that pot is safe, natural...etc. but I still want to say "fuck you!" to every pothead that wants to bring down beer to make their point. Support marijuana and just don't ever mention craft beer in the same sentence, please.

Stupid question. Denver will be happy to take the taxe revenue from the burbs. Another government entity not in tune with its people. Hope Littleton people takes a stand and votes them all out of office next election.

Littlleton is a joke even as a name for a place.

Absolutely, and I love a good beer as much as the next beer snob. It's their loss though.

Basically. But it's the burbs...further, it's fucking Littleton. Did you know there's a subdivision out that way called the "Nazi Subdivision" (SW Littleton). THat's the legal name. Yeah. It's the fucking burbs.

Neither the town of Littleton nor any establishment serving alcohol there are putting "more drunk drivers on the street," nor are "we" doing this, as Harry says. Drunk driving is a choice that each individual makes. Don't try to shift blame to anyone other than the individual making the choice.

The thing is, for all of alcohol's faults, and there are many, its faults are mostly known. Cities know what they're getting, more or less, with a brewery/brewpub/taproom.

Recreational pot, on the other hand, is a whole new thing with unknown implications for communities. Most places are taking a conservative approach, which isn't the same as a hostile approach.

@Mantonat If that's what you have to say to yourself to go to sleep every night.  You're serving alcohol and expect your patron's to be responsible which most likely are but stats prove otherwise.  The more outlets for alcohol, the more drunks will be on the road it's a fact whether you want to admit it or not.  And the town of Littleton is not giving that choice to the individuals who wish to purchase marijuana they're taking that away from them because they know better.  That's the hypocrisy.  Live with it.
