Grand Lake Brewing closing mountain tap house; hopes to reopen west of Denver

Grand Lake Brewing has announced via Facebook that it is closing its tap house in the town of Grand Lake and moving closer to Denver.

The brewery, which has been making Wooly Booger Nut Brown, Stumpjumper IPA, and Plaid Bastard Strong Scotch Ale, among other beers, since 2002 said on the site that it would have like to have stayed in Grand Lake, "but there is no building that would accommodate us. We have been looking for the past two years."

"The new location will be Denver metro on the west side of town. That's all I can say right now," the post read, adding that the brewery will continue to make beer in the interim.

(Updated) Owner Karen Wood told Westword late Monday that the brewery is "working out the details of a location in the Denver metro and won't have any info for another week or so."

Grand Lake Brewing held a closing party on Friday, saying that money would be raised to pay employee severance.

Wood ran an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign in February 2012.

"We are an emerging microbrewery in Grand Lake, Colorado trying to grow and produce more handcrafted beer," the page read. "The Grand Lake Brewing Company was established in 2002 and began with a 3 barrel brewhouse. In the beginning we brewed in a small area on the boardwalk in the Village of Grand Lake, a small mountain town, and sold our beers in a quaint pub atmosphere. In 2005, the system was increased to a 7 barrel capacity. We were told that we were Colorado's best kept secret. So one day we looked down from the mountain and saw all of these lights and thought we must take our beers there. So in 2008, we began bottling our handcrafted beers in the same small area where we had been brewing our handcrafted beers and began self distribution into Denver metro. We would utilize the boardwalk in front of the building to make room inside our small area to operate the bottling line. We now have a 15 barrel system and more room to bottle. Our quaint pub is still on the boardwalk. We (husband and wife team) self distributed our beers for a couple of years but now have the opportunity to expand. We need a kickstart of funds for upgrades to our current system to make this happen. We love what we do and believe we have exceptional beers!"
