Third-worst restaurant in America is in Denver -- and it's not Casa Bonita!

Every year, The Daily Meal does a comprehensive survey and then announces the 101 Best Restaurants in America. Yesterday, the Daily Meal revealed the worst, digging "deep into the recesses of the culinary dustbin" to discover the true bottom feeders. The result is a list of possibly the five worst restaurants in America -- and it includes one in metro Denver.

No, it's not Casa Bonita.

It's Ho Mei Chinese Restaurant. And this place is apparently double trouble: There's a Ho Mei at at 3740 Peoria Street and one at 3260 Colorado Boulevard (a third on Sheridan Boulevard has closed).

The outside of Ho Mei on Colorado Boulevard.
The Daily Meal combines info from both locations in the rationale for Ho Mei's third-worst ranking:

"Ho Mei must translate to the Yiddish 'Oy Vey' or more poignantly, 'Viscous Mush,'" wrote one Yelp reviewer of this questionable Denver Chinese restaurant. "FLEE!," chimed in another reviewer; "AVOID!," another. "The sesame chicken was hard as a rock and tasted like nothing I could identify," another wrote. "The place is dirty. I shudder to imagine what the kitchen looks like. Save your money. Go lick a bus seat to get the same gastrointestinal experience for free." And in 2012, they racked up $7,000 in health code violation fines. Yikes.

Yikes indeed. We sent our intrepid courier to the Colorado Boulevard location to pick up an order of that sesame chicken, as well as sweet and sour chicken, fried rice and an egg roll. The Yelper was right: the sesame chicken was hard as a rock, and tasted like nothing we could identify, either. The sweet and sour chicken was harder, and tasted like nothing at all. (We refrained from licking a bus seat for comparative purposes.) Ho Mei may not be the worst, but it's far from the best.

The four other restaurants that the Daily Meal ranks as among the worst:

5) Bistro Med, Washington, D.C.

4) Kissena Dominican Diner, Kew Gardens, Queens, N.Y.

2) Sun Taco, Los Angeles

1) Colony Café, Miami Beach, Fla.

For the record, metro Denver has just one restaurant on Yahoo's 101 Best Restaurants list for 2013: Frasca Food and Wine clocks in at 58.

I knew this was going to be the place. It's been the worst restaurant for like 10 years and yet the city still keeps it open. It is so freaking dirty in there. I can't believe people still eat at this place. You want you meal to make you sick, try the one on Colorado Blvd lol.

it is amazing how much press and energy is being spent on this establishment.  Enough already.

There will always people who want to pay less than $10 for 3 meals' worth of food...even when it's really, really bad food.

they must do something right, they've been here for years.

I've been plenty of worse places... Like any fast food place. Maybe the people of Denver are just better at writing scathing reviews than people in other places.

The only Ho-mei location I've eaten at is the one on 8610 Washington St, Thornton, CO 80229.  Its really not the greatest food but definitely not the worse! Its a "dolla scoop" place, expectations have to remain on the low side! Although this location wasn't mentioned, it definitely makes me reconsider eating there again! Probably wise just to stay away from any "dolla scoop"! lol

This food has more the look of Asian food rather than Mexican, however in your case, maybe they weren't sure.

Did anyone really read this article? Other than the health code violations, which I would assume they have taken care of or they would not still be open, everything is strictly opinion or exaggeration. Give me some concrete evidence that this is the 3rd worst restaurant in the nation. BS! I've never eaten anything in my life that was "hard as rock". Have you? "Go lick a bus seat." Really? You PF Changers need to get out of your Americanized primadonna chain restaurants and try some mom and pop local places that considering the value are fairly decent. Where else can you get a large portioned meal with a drink for under $5? Sure it's not PF Chang's, but what do you expect? I've been to many restaurants that are "dirtier dives" and would be considered "worse" than this one. Heck, my favorite pizza place in the country is more dingy than this place. I've eaten here several times in the last month. I've had one instance where the meat was a little tough (I went in at 3:30pm) and wasn't surprised because it was that lull time between lunch and supper. The other times, the meat has been fine, the vegetables have always been fresh and slightly crunchy (not overcooked). Every time I've been there have been 2-3 customers in line in front of me and usually 2-3 come in behind. If this really is the 3rd worst restaurant in the country, why are they still open and people still buying...?!

They were worse than Checkers? Everytime I see their commercials, I get nauseated.

OK, so I licked a bus seat and was threatened with arrest.  Added cajun spices.  Look for a chain of bus seat restaurants coming soon.

People don't go there for the food. They go for the experience.
